On November 7th, after over a year of being in the signs of Leo and Aquarius, the North and South Nodes of the Moon will be moving into the signs of Cancer and Capricorn, respectively. The Nodes will stay in these signs until May 5th, 2020, when they will move into the signs of Gemini and Sagittarius.

What Exactly Are the Nodes?

The North and South Nodes are not planets but mathematical points at which the orbit of the Moon intersects with the ecliptic. The North Node is where the Moon moves into the northern ecliptic hemisphere while the South Node is where the Moon moves into the southern ecliptic hemisphere. They are always in opposite signs of the zodiac.

Astrologically, these points represent our karma and destiny. The South Node represents your karma, things you're familiar with, where you're coming from and what you need to let go of. The North Node represents your destiny, things you are unfamiliar with, where you are going and what you need to grow. They are associated with reincarnation and past lives, though you don't necessarily have to belief in these things (personally I do) to see their effect. The Nodes are very spiritual points representing your life's purpose and in my opinion, the most fascinating and important parts of a person's natal chart. In my opinion, you could tell a person's whole life story (or at least the essence of it) just by looking at the North and South Node and the aspects they make to other planets.

North Node in Cancer, South Node in Capricorn

The North Node in Leo taught us the importance of listening to our hearts and being our authentic selves instead of conforming to what we think society wants. What can we expect to learn from the North Node's move into Cancer?

Cancer is the sign of the crab. A cardinal water sign, it is ruled by the Moon, which represents the mother. Cancer rules the 4th house or IC (Nadir), the lowest point of the chart, representing the private sphere. Cancer is all about the home, family, our roots, our traditions, our pasts, our deep-seated emotions. Just as the crab is protected by its shell, Cancer seeks to feel safe, secure and protected. The Sun enters Cancer on the Summer Solstice, the first day of summer, characterizing it as "warm," and caring, sensitive.

Capricorn, however, is the sign of the goat. A cardinal earth sign, it is ruled by the planet Saturn, which represents the father. Capricorn rules the 10th house or MC (Midheaven), the highest point of the chart, representing the public sphere. Capricorn is all about ambition, social status, our professional lives, order, structure, authority and hierarchy. Just as the goat climbs up the mountain, Capricorn seeks to climb up to the top of the social ladder. The Sun enters Capricorn on the Winter Solstice, the first day of winter, characterizing it as "cold," and unfeeling.

This transit is asking us to take a step back from our professional lives, to care for & nurture ourselves. We live in a capitalistic system that all too often values profits over people and all too often we conform to this paradigm. All too often, we sacrifice our health and happiness in order to make a living, but what's the point of making a living when we don't even want to live? This transit will teach us about what's truly important. Fame, wealth, and riches mean nothing in comparison to our homes, our families (whether biological or chosen) or those closest to us, our emotional security, what comforts us and what makes us feel safe.

Now, I will tell you how you can expect it to affect your sign. Remember, I think it is better to read your rising or ascendant sign horoscope first rather than your sun, as these horoscopes are based on the 12 houses. Aries

The North Node will be transiting your 4th house, Cancer's home, no pun intended, meaning this transit will teach you the importance of home and family. You're a go-getter, Aries, and like Capricorn, you tend to be a workaholic, placing your work above anything else, even to the point of taking on more obligations than necessary, even to the point of it wearing down on your mental health. But it's okay to be vulnerable, Aries, it's okay to say "no." You don't have to pretend to be such a tough, unfeeling hard-ass all the time. Everyone needs to feel safe, nurtured, protected and loved, even you.

Taurus

The North Node and South Node will be falling into your 3rd and 9th houses. The 3rd house/9th house axis is all about education, learning, travel and belief systems. While the 9th house is about long journeys, the 3rd house is about short journeys. While the 9th house is about higher education, the 3rd house is about elementary education. While the 9th house rules major religions, the 3rd house rules alternative religions, and so on. While the 9th house is ruled by the intuitive, broad-minded sign of Sagittarius, the 3rd house is ruled by the logical, intellectual Gemini. Meanwhile, the Cancer/Capricorn axis is about survival and tradition. Breaking free from tradition is not an easy thing for Taureans to do, but this transit will have you questioning the “tried and true” belief systems handed down to you from elders, in order to feel out which belief systems truly resonate with you. This transit could also teach you how to better communicate with others, using empathy and kindness, instead of being blinded by rigid beliefs and prejudices. Instead of relying on conventional wisdom, and cultural assumptions, the overall message here is that it’s time you think for yourself and use your own experiential knowledge to figure out what’s true and what’s not, because conventional wisdom isn’t always wise.

Gemini

The 2nd house and Cancer have a lot in common. Both have to do with comfortability, protection and safety. The 2nd house rules our possessions and assets, such as shelter or food, all the basic things we need to survive. We Geminis have a tendency to live in our heads, so much so, that we often neglect our bodies, or the material world around us, forgetting to eat and so on. This transit will teach you the importance of appreciating, valuing, and caring for our material possessions. Meanwhile, the South Node’s transit through the 8th house, Capricorn, will help us to release any rigidity (Capricorn) around sex and intimacy. You might argue that Gemini’s are more often than not open-minded and adventurous people who will try anything once. Sure. But while you may not be rigid towards sex itself, real intimacy has very little to do with sex: it has to do with emotion, something that many of us intellectually-driven air signs have trouble dealing with. This transit will help bring you down to earth and help deal with your emotions in a way you may have been hoping to avoid.

Cancer

The spotlight’s on you, Cancer! The North Node is transiting your 1st house, the house of self. Contrary to cookbook stereotypes, Cancer is a cardinal sign, meaning it’s quite strong, one of the strongest signs of the zodiac. Emotional, yes, but protected by its shell. Since when did emotionality come to mean weakness anyway? Emotions evolved for a reason and it takes courage to be vulnerable. This transit will teach you to embrace your emotionality. We may live in a harsh, cold, Darwinian society that tries to tell you otherwise, but it actually takes courage to wear your heart on your sleeve. The South Node in your 7th house (house of others) is telling you not to let other people push their rules onto you. Don’t let the coldness and rigidity of the world get to you. Don’t let other people tell you what to do or what to feel. Don’t let anyone try to control you. Feel your feelings to the fullest, and trust your intuition. Your intuition is your best armor. Your intuition will tell you how to protect yourself.

Leo

Capricorn South Node in the 6th house (service, day to day work) screams “workaholic.” Do you feel that’s you, Leo? Since 6th house is also the house of health, it also makes me think of “health nuts,” obsessive dieters, and/or fitness fanatics. In any case, I think North Node’s transit through your 12th house (in Cancer) is here to teach you that there is more to life than the physical. It’s important to pay attention to your physical health, but not to the point where it starts to wear down on you, mentally. It’s also important we take care of our emotional health, and do the necessary spiritual work, as well as the material. 6th house is the house of the mundane, and sometimes, being ruled by The Sun (self, ego), Leos will have trouble understanding anything outside their own ego. They will have trouble understanding anything they did not see with their own eyes or hear with their own ears etc. The 12th house is all about oneness. In truth, there is no ego. We are one. This transit will help you to face your fears of the unknown. It will help you to become aware of subtleties and all things unseen. I won’t say it will “kill your ego,” though maybe put it to sleep for a little while, give it a good nap. This transit will take you on a spiritual journey, from which you will never be the same.

Virgo

The North Node in Cancer will be transiting through your 11th house or house of friends. I would say this transit is about learning how to nurture and care for the people in your social circle. I would also say this transit could be about giving back to your greater community, maybe getting involved in politics or community service. It's a good time to reflect on how your actions and lifestyle choices affect other people, and even our larger ecosystem (11th house) rather than being self-absorbed (5th house) and choosing to do things that may not be so good because "this is what I like to do! this is my opinion!" I would examine the things you like to do, the things that bring you joy, and the ways in which you express yourself, to see if they measure up with the greater good. With the Capricorn South Node transiting your 5th house (the house of joy, self-expression & children), this transit could also be about nurturing your inner child. You have a tendency to be very self-contained and even repressed, Virgo, it's about time you released that and shared your creativity with the world because who knows, someone else may be going through the same thing you are and sharing your experiences may very well help them! If you have children, this transit could be about trying a gentler, more nurturing approach to parenting rather than a strict one. If you have any issues relating to how you were treated as a child, now is a good time to release them. It's the perfect time to find your own family, your chosen family, a family of friends based on shared values and interests.

Libra

Libra represents the scales. Libra is the sign of balance, and this transit is going to teach you how to strike the balance between work and home. The North Node in Cancer will fall into your 10th house or MC, the house of career and public image, while the South Node in Capricorn falls into your 4th house or IC, the house of home and family. This transit will teach you to work hard without neglecting your family or your emotions. This transit will teach you to care for yourself and your family without having to neglect your career. This transit will help you find the right way to balance both. It could also help to bring Cancerian qualities (such as nurturing, protecting and caring for others) into the workplace. Being a hardworker does not mean to abandon these traits and become a cutthroat businessman. Empathy and good social skills will actually help you succeed in the workplace. It may also help to look for a job that allows you to put these qualities into practice (I.E childcare, or animal care).

Scorpio

The North Node and South Node axis will be falling into your 9th and 3rd houses, respectively. The 9th house/3rd house axis is all about education, travel and belief systems. While the 3rd house (traditionally ruled by Mercury/Gemini) represents elementary education, short journeys, alternative religions, and the logical mind (as well as general communication), the 9th house (traditionally ruled by Jupiter/Sagittarius) represents higher education, long journeys, major religions and the intuitive mind. Capricorn in the 3rd house is very logical. Cancer in the 9th house is very intuitive. I would say this transit is about letting go of the need to overthink and over-examine your beliefs or the way you communicate with others. It's time to open up your mind, to intuitive or emotional knowledge or understanding. If you were a person who focused on the details, it's time to learn how to focus on the bigger picture. It's a good time to find a belief system that resonates with you, especially one based on caring, nurturing and empathy. This transit favors moral, ethical, philosophical and spiritual intelligence. There's more to "intelligence," than book smarts or what type of degree you have (if any). If there was any part of you, before this transit, that was "snobby," or looked down on others, you may find yourself thrown into an experience where the "knowledge" (skills) you thought were relevant no longer matter. It's a good time for developing cultural sensitivity. It's a good time for learning about other cultures and learning how to respect other people's deeply-cherished belief systems even if they don't make sense to you.

Sagittarius

With Capricorn South Node in the 2nd house I think it's safe to say that this transit is about becoming less materialistic, less possessive. Both the 2nd house and the sign of Capricorn are concerned with material possessions. But the 2nd house is also about values, something that Sagittarians hold very dear. The 8th house is the house of death, sex and rebirth (also the house of taxes and other people's resources). In short, it's the house of the unknown. It's all about letting go, giving up control, and this is something that freedom-loving Sagittarians greatly fear. Cancer North Node in the 8th house has a lot to do with developing intimacy with other people, not just sexually but emotionally, and Sagittarius, you need to learn that being sympathetic to other people does not have to mean giving up your personal integrity or your sense of values. Developing intimate relationships with other people does not have to mean giving up your freedom. It's time to find yourself a partner who gives you the freedom to be vulnerable, a partner who allows you to express your deepest and darkest emotions. It's time to dive in, to explore your own emotional complexity and to share it with another. Sex is more than just something physical: it can also be a very spiritual experience. It's time to release your fears, your fears of losing control, your fears of letting go, whether these fears relate to death or intimacy or both.

Capricorn

Capricorn and Aries (natural ruler of the 1st house) are actually a lot alike: both cardinal signs ruled by traditionally masculine planets (Saturn and Mars, respectively). It makes sense then, that the South Node should be transiting your 1st house, or house of self (traditionally ruled by Aries). For you, Capricorn, your identity is often tied up in the work that you do. Often, you can be so caught up in life’s responsibilities, that your emotional life may be lacking. Your partners or friends may feel their emotional needs are not met. You appreciate order, structure, and that’s all well and good, but sometimes it can come off as a little authoritarian. Your partner(s) may feel you treat them more like a boss or a parental figure than an intimate, equal and loving partner. The North Node’s transit through your 7th house (relationships, others) will teach you how to better empathize with others. It will teach you how to be vulnerable and how to relate to others emotionally, instead of telling them to toughen up. Its about time you take a step back from your work responsibilities and show you partner/s (or friends) what an emotionally supportive, loving, and nurturing person you can be.

Aquarius

At first glance, the emotional Cancer sitting in the practical, service-orientated 6th house (while the materialistic Capricorn sits in your spiritual 12th house) may seem a bit paradoxical but as someone born with a similar placement (Scorpio North Node in the 6th house, Taurus South Node in the 12th), I can tell you it actually makes a lot of sense. The 12th house is also about isolation and this includes prisons and hospitals as much as it includes monasteries. As a humanitarian air sign, you have a tendency to get too wrapped up in your head, even at the expense of your own health and hygiene. You also have a tendency to neglect the individual in favor of the greater good. The North Node in the 6th house is all about “returning to the world.” What can you do to put care into your everyday routine? You can’t save the world, Aquarius, no matter how much you want to. It’s best to start small. Start by helping out the people around you. Help out a friend in need. Maybe volunteer at a shelter. This could be an animal shelter, a homeless shelter, it could be anything. Do some volunteer work. Make sure the way you treat others in your everyday life aligns with your humanitarian ideals. Do your ideals measure up to reality? Do not get stuck playing intellectual mind games, for that does nothing in the long run, and do not fall into the trap of being a “better activist” than others. This isn’t a competition, this isn’t about ego. This is about human service and doing as much as you practically can to make the world a better place.

Pisces

Awww! Pisces, too good for this world. Often, Pisces’ are so empathetic to the feelings of those around them, that they lose touch with what it is they feel themselves. This transit should help you with that! The South Node in Capricorn will be transiting through your 11th house of friends and social groups, helping you to release any friendships that are no longer serving you (or at least helping you get some space from these friendships so you are no longer enmeshed) and break free from any organizations or groups that don’t resonate with your truest feelings. Meanwhile, the North Node in Cancer is transiting through your 5th house, of joy and self-expression. This transit will help you get in touch with your own true feelings and what it is that you like to do, what it is that brings you joy. Pisces, you have an amazing imagination and awesome creative abilities. Now is the time to utilize it. Play some music, write a poem, paint a picture. All of these are good ways to help you get in touch with your emotions and express what you’re feeling.

Conclusion

So, that's how you can expect the North Node in Cancer (and South Node in Capricorn!) to affect your sign. You have until May 5th, 2020 to learn these lessons. If you're interested in learning more about how this transit will affect you personally, feel free to message me on Facebook for a private, in-depth personal reading. If you have any personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars or even Jupiter or Saturn) or angles (ASC, IC, DSC, MC) in Cancer, this transit will affect you. If you have your natal North Node and South Node in Cancer or Capricorn (or the other cardinal signs, Libra or Aries), this transit will also affect you. Unfortunately, I didn't have time in this one tiny article to cover all the possible combinations but I know that if I had any personal planets in Cancer, I'd be interested in learning more.
