How Powerful Are Kyber Crystals Before Being Used For Lightsabers?

Let's Think About This

In the Star Wars universe, one of the most interesting and mysterious objects in the mythology is Kyber crystal. Kyber These crystals are what give lightsabers their power. They are also the fuel for the Empire’s secret project, the Death Star. But how powerful are Kyber crystals actually?

The crystals themselves are sentient beings that have a great connection to the realm of the Force. Kyber crystals usually are found in sacred planets that have a great connection to the living Force, and the spiritual realm of the Force. It is also believed that one Kyber crystal has enough power to destroy an entire planet. This theory would be supported as Kyber crystals, as shown in Rogue One, are the fuel to Project Stardust, the Death Star. Onscreen, only two planets have been shown to host many Kyber crystals. These planets, of course, are Jedha, and the icy planet of Ilum.

In Rogue One, Jedha was a sacred place for the Jedi religion. The planet itself had temples where large amounts of Kyber crystals from different sizes were kept. When the Empire decided to use Kyber crystals as the fuel for Project Stardust, they practically sacked the entire planet, and then destroyed Jedha City. So there was no evidence of their doings, or any evidence of their secret weapon.

Further evidence of the power within Kyber crystals has to be Starkiller Base. This superweapon was constructed on the planet of Ilum, where all the crystals in the planet helped the weapon to work, even if it needed suns to generate its deadly beams. For many eras, Ilum was used by the Jedi, as a sacred group where they took their Padawan, and they could obtain their lightsaber crystal. The Jedi knew that Kyber crystals were sentient, and they knew the Jedi never choose the crystal, but that rather the crystal is the one who chooses the Jedi. After serving the Jedi as a right of passage for many eras, Ilum was abandoned after order 66. Years after the Empire, Ilum was basically cut in half, since the First Order used it to built their new super laser, using the planet’s core.

Something else that can prove the amazing and insane power that Kyber crystals withhold, is Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber. Kylo’s crystal had a huge crack on it, and this made the crystal very unstable, and forced the crystal to produce higher amounts of energy. The energy that the crystal generated was so strong, Kylo had to create two exhaustion pipes on his lightsaber, in order for the extra energy could be released safely. Kylo’s saber, although still very unstable, is stronger than a common lightsaber, thanks to the crack on his Kyber crystal.

For many years, Kyber crystals were only believed to be used by the Jedi, to power their laser swords. Yet many people who took the Force as their religion used Kyber crystals as a form of connection to the spiritual force, and used them to pray, to meditate, and to enhance their beliefs in the spiritual, and living Force. Massive Kyber crystals like the one shown on the planet Malachor were used as a source to generate power within ancient Sith temples. This shows us that Kyber crystals weren’t only used to power lightsabers, but also as a source of power by the Sith, and probably also by the Jedi.

There is still so much we don’t know about these mysterious crystals. Why are they so powerful? How are they sentient? And are they related to the power of the Whills? Whether these questions are one day answered remains a mystery, but it does not change the fact that Kyber crystals are one of the most interesting parts of the Star Wars universe.
