EXTREME WEIRD CRAP! Science Vs Mysticism from a Philosophical viewpoint.

.

The following text is NOT what I personally believe (At all! Even a bit!) but rather 'playing with thoughts', the same way you might ideally fidget with a piece of string.

.

If you like, you can categorise the following train of thought as,

“Stupid things that pass through your mind when you are drunk.”

.

PS!

DO NOT HAVE NIGHTMARES!

.

“If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it,

Will it still make a sound?”

.

Once upon a time, I used to think,

.

This is a very stupid question!

.

The sound is made by variations in any atmosphere.

A rock falling on to the ground on a totally lifeless planet in deep space still makes a sound.

.

The physical laws of science don’t give a flying crap if anything can consciously hear it or not!

.

Stupid Question!

.

Case Closed!

.

.

THEN...

.

One night I decided to drink a load of beers while watching TV

.

There is a TV show called QI made by BBC 1,

I was a repeat of it on a channel called DAVE.

One of the guests was Dr Brain Cox,

.

.

COMMON SENSE ALERT!

The following is a transcript; so obviously, the rules of grammar are not applied!

Because it is a transcript from a naturally occurring live conversation.

So you lot in the grammar police can just sit down and shut the hell up for a moment!

.

.

<Start>

.

Dr Brian Cox :

.

According to Einstein’s theory of space-time which is our best theory of space-time,

.

There is no such thing as a present moment which spans the universe or indeed even the earth,

Or in fact, two people moving relative to each other,

.

Stephan Fry:

.

It is absurd to think of an event that might be happening “Now” in the Galaxy and me doing this! <Stephan Fry moves a pen> has been simultaneous,

That has no meaning, cosmically, does it!

.

Dr Brian Cox:

.

You can swap the order of them around as long as they are not causally connected.

I mean, we do not know how time works on a very fundamental level.

If I throw a glass over there and it smashes on the ground,

Then obviously I caused it to smash by throwing it.

You cannot have the smash before I throw it.

However, if you look.... Let's say Sun and the Earth,

.

And the sun is eight light minutes away,

.

So the sun explodes now, then we will not know for eight minutes.

.

So for eight minutes anything that I do here,

I talk, and I talk and four minutes later I am still talking,

.

So you can swap the order of those things around until the point when they causally connect.

.

So in that case until the explosion destroys the earth.

.

<End>

.

.

QI Series 1 Episode 7 “Incomprehensible“

.

Original airing Friday the 21st Oct 2011 BBC2,

.

.

And I sat there full of beer and thought,

“Hang on that cannot be right?!”

.

Because we all know how much more arrogant douche bags like me get after they have a few beers in us!

.

Assuming by Causal effect (him being a physicist talking about physics) he is limiting the argument to physical causal effects then physics must be wrong!

.

Because that would mean that there can never be any causal effect between a long-dead star and anyone here on earth.

.

But there is!

.

That long-dead star still makes physical things and effects stuff happening to us here!

And it makes real physical changes in all our lives without any physical causality!

And I can prove it! (ish)

.

I present just four possible pieces of evidence for you all to consider.

.

.

Exhibit A

The Painting “Starry Night” by Van Gough

Which then lead to the Hit Song “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)” by Don McLean © Universal Music Publishing Group.

.

.

Exhibit B

The child's song “Twinkle Twinkle little star”

.

.

Exhibit C

Horoscopes

.

.

Exhibit D

Dr Brian Cox himself and his entire scientific career!

.

.

Because while there cannot be any direct physical causality from the long-dead star, we are most definitely affected and inspired by our observation of it!

.

And those observations and inspirations make us create physical things such as art.

.

And that art makes a vast amount of money (whose value is also a commonly held delusion) which is used to hire people, feed them and allow them to pay taxes.

.

And those taxes can be spent by governments to produce weapons that kill people.

.

And just as any other chaos butterfly effect, goes on and on!

.

All from something that can NOT have any physical Causality with us!

.

Yes this whole argument seems a little pedantic,

.

Ok, I hold my hand up and admit it!

.

It is very pedantic and douchy of me!

.

And you could argue that,

‘Photons of visible light from that long-dead star still travel and hit the eyes of us observers to make us feel so inspired!’

.

Like the thrown glass (Photon of visible light) that smashes into the floor (our eye).

.

The Observation cannot come before the existence of that long-dead star, throws out its light out into the dark.

.

Sure the amount of physical mass of those photons Vs the potential weight of the crap storm of physical effects that chain react here seems a little disproportionate!

.

But hey “Such is life”

.

But then it got me thinking about the nature of our ability to observe and the potential mystical non-science connections.

.

Physics:

.

If you have a single photon

(maybe it is from our long-dead star).

.

And you direct or aim it in a plain,

To try to get it to travel through a small slit,

Out the other side,

Travel a short way,

Then through another slit,

To hit a target on the other side.

.

According to physics,

If either slit is observed it will not make it through both slits, (it will miss its target)

.

BUT

.

If Neither sit is observed,

(Say the physicist doing the experiment needs the toilet, has a tea break or simply turns his back.)

Then the Photon will make it through and hit its target.

.

However

If the Photon of visible light is observed after it has been shot in the correct direction, but BEFORE it hits the target.

.

(The physicist suddenly pops his head round to corner!)

.

It will NOT have gone through both slits!

(Even though that is the only possible path it could have taken to successfully hit the target!)

.

And this has been PROVEN!

(If I am wrong about this someone please tell me in the comments below)

.

So a physical effect of a photon is changed by whether it was observed or not!

.

The same sort of Photon as was shot out by our long-dead star!

.

.

THIS IS WHERE IT STARTS TO GET WEIRD.

.

I REMIND YOU AGAIN!

.

DO NOT HAVE NIGHTMARES!

.

.

Observation is an act of consciousness and will.

.

.

NOTE!

By Observe, I mean by any means,

Not just Eyesight!

Hearing, Touching, Tasting etc, etc, all count as a conscious choice to enact observation as well!

.

By simply being aware of something and having the will to perceive it you can change what physically happens!

.

.

One of the Tenants of some wicker Majik is,

.

See

.

Know

.

Will

.

Dare

.

Keep Silent.

.

There are variations depending on the branch of Mysticism being studied, but most follow along with the same lines!

.

.

Majik says that being conscious of something and making the small act of will to observe it can change reality.

.

.

Physics says being conscious of something and making the small act of will to observe it can change a physical causal effect.

.

.

SO IS MAGIC REAL?!

.

.

Errrrr Anyone else feeling a little “Spooked” yet?

.

.

So this opens up this question.

.

.

If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it,

Will it still make a sound?

.

.

George Berkley, Treaties concerning the principles of human knowledge 1710

Though obviously that version was written in a 1710 style!

The current phrasing appears to have originated in the 1910 book Physics by Charles Riborg Mann and George Ransom Twiss.

.

.

How much power does the act of consciously observing things have?

.

And what if it is not a one-way street?

.

What is the thing we make the act of will to consciously observe, can affect us back?

.

.

"He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby becomes a monster.

And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee."

.

.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil. 1886

.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (15 October 1844 – 25 August 1900) was a German philosopher, whose critiques of contemporary culture, religion, and philosophy centred on a basic question regarding the foundation of values and morality.

.

.

Personally, I do not like him.

.

I think he is a total arse hat teaching how to use intellectualism to self-licensed and justify doing evil stuff!

.

Probably because he was inappropriately romantically obsessed with his own sister!

.

The scary thing is,

That consciously observing can affect us back?

.

Because while you noting (or not noting) the path of a visible light photon can change what 'it' does!

.

The same conscious act of will to observe that visible light photon will affect you back by making you inspired to both create, feel, love and hate!

And destroy!
