The First Royal Family

By Marcus Ickersurfs

It is believed that all fairies alive today are direct descendants of Henry Khan. He led his army to victory in a ghastly war that shook the world of fairies forever. He was granted the title of Fairy Emperor and was the first world leader of fairies.

He was born in Wales but loved China so much that he decided to make it his home. He a Buddhist temple already established by humans as his headquarters. His palace faced a mountain cliff.

When he was crowned, Henry Khan was a handsome man praised for his muscular physique, long purple beard shaped like a heart, and a moustache designed to resemble butterfly wings. He had five mistresses and couldn't decide which one he wanted to marry and produce heirs with. In the end, he had daughters with all of them but married none.

His first mistress was the popular Cherry Cascade. The ruby pixie had gone far in life, from sleeping under tomatoes to a secret chamber in the temple. She was popular among the fey folk that lived in the water.

Her daughter's name, Misty came from the arctic fog that covered her childhood home. Misty loved dipping her feet in the water and would swim in any patch of water she could come across. Her coat of arms was a silver dolphin. She grew up to be highly committed and wanted to do her best to preserve the environment.

Berry Balance was another of Henry's mistresses, she and Cherry once held an extreme rival-ship during their pregnancies which eventually subsided when their girls were born. Cherry and Berry went on to be great friends.

May Balance was born below an orchid. She liked her food and enjoyed riding on butterfly's backs until she learned to fly herself. One could talk to her about anything. An orange cat was her crest, like the one she befriended as a baby.

Things did not go so well for the third mistress. Rose Relic died whilst giving birth to Dawn. Historians believe that she was Henry's favourite mistress and the one he would have most likely to have married if she had survived. Henry had recorded in his diary that he loved her sparkling skin and feisty passion. Her princess had also inherited her traits. Dawn bore the crest of the purple penguin with pride.

Lily Legend was executed for treason, after being accused of sleeping with humans. She left behind Iris, who watched her mother succumb to the flames. She held the golden dragon crest close to her heart – the only thing that remained of her mother.

Renee Rainbow outlived all the mistresses. Cherry and Berry were poisoned the night Lily Legend was executed. The charges against Lily Legend turned out to be false. With only one mistress left, it meant that Henry was free to marry Renee and she would become the fairy empress.

Supporters of the other mistresses accused Renee Rainbow of hatching a plot to get rid of the other mistresses so she could make herself the Empress. She was arrested, but Henry asked for the charges to be dropped due to lack of evidence. Renee remained in the palace, raising her daughter, Serena with the help of Henry. She gave her daughter the crest of a pink rabbit. Henry wrote in his diary that Serena was his favourite daughter for her kindness and sincerity and her ambitions to change the world for the many and not for the privileged few.

Renee one day disappeared, never to be heard from again until the emperor's death.

The five fairy sisters grew up together and got on very well. They all inherited beauty from their mothers and the strength of their father. They all had beady emerald eyes like their father and his plump lips.

When the princesses became adult fairies, the great fairy emperor had tripled in size and lost his luscious locks of mauve hair. He had gained so much weight that he could no longer fly.

The governors panicked. Henry Khan had no official heirs. On his deathbed, Henry Khan had composed a will that his huge empire was to be split equally among his five daughters. He signed the will and took his last breath.

The five fairy princesses became queens. But the title of a queen was not enough for them: they wanted more. The sisters had lived in harmony and peace, but executing the will prove the undoing of their tight relationship. The final nail in the coffin was a wandering human prince in white satin, riding a unicorn. The newly appointed fairy queens were enchanted by his exotic beauty.

For Misty Cascade, he was a new companion to go swimming with. May Balance found a tutor in the prince and he taught her a lot of things in the outside world. Dawn Relic confided in the prince and told him all the kingdom's secrets. Serena Rainbow found a soulmate in the prince.

When the prince was away, they cried in their sleep wondering if a fairy queen would ever be good enough for the dashing human prince. Misty wanted fun. May sought for knowledge. Dawn searched for trust. Serena desired love.

Iris Legend wanted power. She saw the human prince as a threat. She was already engaged to Can-Il, the eldest son of the most powerful fae clan in Korea. She had witnessed the hunting and bloodshed that humans had done. She had watched her mother be wrongly executed for illegally mingling with humans.

Nothing good could come from the prince as far as she was concerned. She tried to warn her sisters, but they took no notice and assumed she was jealous and plotted to keep him for herself.

The accusation hurt Iris. After the death of her mother, she made a vow to herself that her first marriage will be her only marriage and that she would be nobody's mistress.

The inheritance to their father's kingdom remained unsolved so the governors decided to hold an election where all the fairy folk and governors all over the world would vote for who they want to be the fairy empress.

When it came to their pitches, all five sisters raised good points and promised a bright future for the fairy society, but the damage had already been done: falling in love with a human was already scandalous enough.

Iris Legend was elected as the fairy empress. She honoured her father's will by letting her sisters keep their titles as fairy queens and sent them off to rule their kingdoms. Misty ruled Australia's fairies. May governed the fairies in North America. Dawn reigned over South American fairies. Serena was the fairy queen of Europe. Iris took care of the Asian fairies. The other two continents were split between the sisters depending on how they voted. The fairy queens were allowed to make their own laws, but Empress Iris was allowed to overrule them.

Misty Cascade, May Balance and Dawn Relic eventually forgot about the prince and got married to respectable houses.

Renee rainbow confessed to murdering Henry's other mistresses and admitted that she framed Lily Legend. Serena tracked the prince down and found out he was nothing more than a common thief, hired by Renee to help Serena win the title. To stop her from telling anyone, he trapped her in a flask and tried to sell her on the black market.

News broke of out Queen Serena's disappearance and Empress Iris tracked the thief down and cursed him. It was discovered that the thief was enchanted by Renee Rainbow who had hatched a plot to overthrow Empress Iris.

Renee Rainbow is executed and Empress Iris casts a charm that protects all fairies from other creatures. The charm also helped fairies live a long and happy life and gave the people lots of power. But the powerful charm had a terrible side effect as it made fairies even weaker to poison and iron barbs.

Ever since Iris had set the charm off, no war has ever broken out between fairies since.

Thus, the five fairy queens gave their names to five political parties. A general election is held every 50 years. The fairy king or queen from each political party takes part in a series of live debates and rallies. And the fairy monarch with the biggest majority is granted the title of fairy emperor or empress.

When a fairy king or queen dies or resigns, an election will be carried out. The general public will choose between the five closest heirs, and the heir with the most votes will be elected. The process will be the same for the title of fairy emperor.
