Dolls Already Do That

When the movie Megan came out, I thought about how in technology there is already dolls being made that can talk, sing, move, eat, or even use the bathroom. The fact this felt new and scary to people was strange to me because it seems as if already here. When watching Megan, I even thought that instead of a bot doll going rouge there would actually be a human using the bot for their selfish bidding, At that, the movie Companion came out and fulfilled that concept.

The progress of advancement for dolls has been phenomenal. Society has gone from stiff dolls that just sit on a shelf unless played with to added movement elements. There are dolls that can swing themselves, type on a typewriter, or sing a song into a microphone. This usually all comes with a on and of switch or a select button/trigger point on the doll to function until powered down. The creepy part begins if the doll keeps these actions continuing on their own without saying so.

A doll I have on a swing starts swinging in the middle of the night, another singing any song they come up with into their microphone any time, or typing their own message onto a typewriter will look more like they have their own brain or way of power. Are algorithms really getting that advanced or are we going with the possessed dolls option?

If a typewriter doll starts typing out their own messages, would it be cool or time to get a doll with less functioning? Possibly just start to have an entire collection just to be able to get a group talking to one another. What about taking care of little baby or toddler dolls for those who don't want actual children? This is perfect for those mothers who can't stand their children growing up, they can cart around a baby doll forever.

I see it as wonderful that a doll can become better at one function. If a doll can be programmed well enough to sing along a harmony with you during a song and a writing doll able to sit with you and map out an entire writing concept, then right on! Let's get those specific type of doll advancements! The limit begins when a doll is versatile and can be good at several different actions that the uncanny valley starts to set in.

How about where the doll is just stuck in one spot? The swinging doll can keep staying and swinging on that swing, but the day to walk in and that swing is empty would be a strange doll hunt... Tired of the same old swing, she finds something else to ride while she creaks the wood on a rocking horse.

What about a doll house that has the dolls living an actual life right beside your own? Doll houses are starting to have actually functioning washing machines and tubs. Even mini fridges that keep actual little drinks cool and all types of furniture such as a folding bed in front of a little functioning television.

I used to go to a town during Christmas that has little elf dolls in the windows making toys. Seeing this as a kid definitely had me opened up to all possibilities any dolls could be built or made to do. This concept was already here to me years ago, but mostly explored positively. Later down the line we have the versions of people thinking about how it could get out of hand if an eye is not kept on what the doll is doing or what someone is trying to make the doll up to!
