Paving the Way for AI Consciousness: A Theoretical Framework

The authors ground their assessment criteria in the premise that consciousness originates from information processing, independent of material composition. This concept, known as computational functionalism, posits that neuroscience-based theories applicable to humans and animals could be extended to encompass AI systems.

Drawing on these principles, the team distilled six theories into a collection of indicators for consciousness. For instance, the global workspace theory posits that distinct specialized systems collaborate for cognitive tasks. These systems operate autonomously yet amalgamate into a cohesive whole. To assess an AI system's alignment with this theory, one would scrutinize its architecture and information flow.
