Daisy Ridley Says "Never Say Never" To Returning As Rey

The Star Wars sequel trilogy has been a wile ride. Some of the choices were questionable, so it is an understatement to say that the trilogy got a very mixed reception. Regardless of what one may think of the results, it told a story mainly focused on Rey, portrayed by Daisy Ridley. Even if the writing could have been improved in some places (your mileage may vary), Daisy Ridley gave it her all with her acting abilities. Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker was advertised as the end of the saga films. But of course, it is possible for Lucasfilm to change their minds in the future.

So if that were ever the case, which characters would we see returning? Understandably, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford feel that they have fulfilled what they could with their iconic characters Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. As for the younger generation, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac have shot down any possibility of returning to Star Wars, so it seems that we may not see them as Finn and Poe in the movies again. However, Naomi Ackie has expressed interest in future stories about Jannah. Of course, there is also the question of whether the sequel trilogy’s main character and star could ever return to the big screen.

The Direct has passed on what Daisy Ridley said about the possibility of returning to play Rey. This is what she said:

"Never say never, but to me The Rise of Skywalker was tied off with a bow."

It seems that Daisy Ridley would be content with The Rise of Skywalker being the last that we see of Rey’s story on the big screen. However, she may still be open to returning someday, which is more than can be said for Boyega and Isaac. The roles of those two feel like they were, at times, pushed to the side or not presented in the best way possible. They performed well with what they were given, but their characters were not served as well as Ridley’s was. If we ever get another Rey-centered film, it might be odd not having Finn and Poe along for the ride. Then again, one can imagine Rey having a solo movie that is more personal and does not involve as large scale of a conflict that would require more of an ensemble cast.

Speaking for myself, I scratched my head over some of the decisions in the trilogy, including the Rey Palpatine angle. However, Rey being adopted into the Skywalker family is something that I wanted for a while, and that is pretty much what we got at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. So I felt satisfied with that scene, even if it has become the butt of the joke in many memes, which themselves can be pretty funny at times. While that ending could feel like a proper conclusion to some, I feel that there is more to be told. I would like to see Rey rebuild the Jedi Order so that we can see the Jedi become what they are meant to be at the furthest point in the timeline of the canon. There was an opportunity to have Luke Skywalker do that just as he did in Legends, but canon took a different turn. If we ever see the rebuilding of the Jedi Order on the big screen with Ridley back in the role, that would be great. However, at this point, I would also be fine with seeing it in other media like books, comics, video games, and animation. The future is always in motion, so only time will tell whether we see Ridley return as Rey.
