'Book Of Boba Fett' Post-credits Scene Seemingly Confirms That Cobb Vanth Did Survive

The Book of Boba Fett had lots of surprises, and the surprises continued, even when the credits started rolling. As with the second season finale of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett included a surprising post-credits scene. This scene revealed the presumed dead Freetown marshall, Cobb Vanth, resting comfortably in Boba's bacta tank, seemingly prepared to be operated on by a mod tech. This was the same person who fixed Fennec’s fatal injuries with cybernetics during a flashback scene earlier in the series. The clear allusion, of course, was that Cobb, who was gunned down by Cad Bane in retaliation for standing up to the Pykes’ spice trade in this territory, would likely survive his fatal injuries.

The first episode of season two of The Mandalorian introduced viewers to the character of Cobb Vanth, the marshall of Mos Pelgo (later renamed "Freetown"). He had attracted Din's attention as someone who was spotted wearing a Mandalorian armor. As Din later discovered, he was wearing the armor of none other than infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett, who, at that point, was still missing in action, having fallen into the Sarlacc pit during the events of Return of the Jedi. According to Vanth’s account to Din and in his first earlier appearance in the novel Aftermath, he had acquired the armor from the Jawa scavengers who found Boba Fett after he escaped the Sarlacc pit. In exchange for helping Mos Pelgo hunt down and slay a krayt dragon plaguing the Mos Pelgo territories, Vanth agreed to give Fett's Mandalorian armor back to Din. The deal was later fulfilled after a massive battle that involved many citizens of Mos Pelgo, as well as a tribe of Tusken Raiders against the beast. Din returned the armor to its rightful owner, Boba, when they met later on Tython.

Din was brought into Book of Boba Fett during “Chapter Five: Return of the Mandalorian,” after having offered to help Fett in his war against the Pyke Syndicate, who was attempting to establish dominance on Tatooine and continue their profitable spice trade. Din sought out Cobb in the next episodde to persuade him and the citizens of Freetown to join the fight against the Pykes. Cobb reluctantly agreed to talk to the townspeople. However, before he could call a meeting, he was confronted by none other than the bounty hunter Cad Bane, who warned Cobb that they would be punished if they continue to oppose the Pykes. As Cobb was unwilling to accept the deal, the encounter turned into an old-fashioned showdown between the grizzled marshall and the cunning bounty hunter. Unfortunately, both Cobb and his deputy were seemingly gunned down by Cad Bane. Without the armor to protect him, Cobb was presumed dead, another casualty of the Pyke's deadly power play on Tatooine.

In "Chapter Seven: In the Name of Honor," the able-bodied residents of Freetown ultimately rallied to Boba's cause, possibly because of Cobb's presumed death, or maybe in spite of it. Eventually, despite a huge battle and numerous casualties, Boba and his allies won. Boba finally killed Cad Bane (with whom he had a personal history with going back to the Clone Wars era). Fennec Shand assassinated the inner circle of the Pyke Syndicate on the planet, cementing Boba's claim as daimyo. This left the door open to, hopefully, another season of The Book of Boba Fett, as well as setting up the third season of The Mandalorian.

Many of the major characters featured in Book of Boba Fett thankfully survived. Sadly, Madam Garza was killed and her Sanctuary was destroyed by the Pykes in the previous episode. Boba's Gamorrean guards were also killed by a group of Klatoonians during the final battle. However, all the other main characters (including Boba's new Rancor) survived the battle. As the post-credits scenes implied, Cobb Vanth would return and likely be a part of any further adventures involving Boba Fett and his crew, and, potentially, Din and Grogu, should they need to return to Tatooine.
