What Do You Think?

Since Disney’s buyout of Star Wars, many have wondered what amount of content we would get from Lucasfilm now that it had all the power and resources of Disney under its command. The first real wave of Star Wars was 2013-2019, when we got five movies and two television series, along with many books. It was a good effort with some great content. However, now it seems that things are really ramping up. We are getting several television shows in one year. While the movies have been spaced out, they do seem to want to be on their A game when it comes to making these films. On the book side we have an entire multimedia event in The High Republic, and a few games are beginning to trickle their way in with the new Knights of the Old Republic remake. We might be entering a new Golden Age of Star Wars.

As stated earlier, the early stages of Star Wars was a steady but still rather small amount of content: five movies and two television shows and books and comics sprinkled in. Yet something about it felt restrained in some way. Obviously the biggest factor was that the sequel trilogy was being made. In retrospect, it made sense that everything had to slow down in order to develop the new lore.

Now with Disney+, Star Wars has a new avenue to make content without having to go into the theaters. It has a new outlet to tell all sorts of new stories and ideas. With the new streaming service in need of content, Disney is probably far more willing to be experimental and try new things. The Mandalorian is the first big experiment for them, and one that has proven to be a massive success. Because of this and the success of its season 2, they have announced a dozen new Star Wars shows which will one day fill our small screens.

Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka and other stories are going to expand the Star Wars universe as time goes on. So many shows are being carefully crafted by their creatives. Nothing in this new era of Star Wars right now feels rushed, which means that they will have a much smoother productions as well. However, with so much content and so much to look forward to, a never ending Star Wars is on the horizon.

What does this mean for the franchise? First and foremost, we hope to see more diversity in the product. The weight of the entire franchise is no longer resting on the shoulders of a single movie. If one thing flops or does not get a positive response, then there is soon to be another show. The amount of content is only going to help not hurt the fanbase and hopefully give us new ways of viewing the world of Star Wars beyond just the films. Of course with things like The High Republic on right now, we see a massive publication event telling a brand new story in an unexplored era. This allows the narrative to not be limited by the film canon, and can have its own unique identity. Even the current Marvel comics seem to be coming into their own, forging side characters who are just as beloved to the readers.

So yes, we are about to enter a Golden Age of Star Wars. There is so much content on the way. We are getting new lore, new characters, sometimes old ones too. Unlike in the past, the Star Wars universe is able to expand beyond printed media. It can now utilize various media outlets, from television, to comics, to video game. What awaits us in the future of the galaxy far, far away? As a wise Jedi Master once said, “Always in motion, the future is.”
