Only one-fourth of the world population realize and recognize biotechnology and biologics. This field has been a kind of enigma since people are ignorant of the tokens of the field accurately. This blog will enlighten some aspects and working of these fields.

BEGINNINGS

Dating back to 6000 BC, the time when the human brain first tasted a fermented drink. This wonderful serendipity led to a marvelous perspective of microscopical life forms. As human beings evolved and began civilization, Biotechnology started gaining attention. They started fermenting food and consuming fermented beverages.

Gradually as time passed many such small thoughts by early humans kindled and led to the growth of modern-day science fields. The curious insight on such smaller life forms and their environment were astonishing and left most scientist ‘drooling’.Luckily humans wanted an explanation, they needed evidence as to why things happen.

Why is there a change in things that they see?

The “why” of the early era led to the luxury of today’s modern science.

The field has seen so many dumb and groundbreaking revelations. Today this field is the backbone of all life forms that ever exist in this blue globe. People were brilliant to understand and apply the knowledge of Physics and Chemistry to explore and investigate the biological aspects of life. Then slowly the engineering aspects stormed into the field and today we are enjoying the most advanced luxury of life science and health care industries.

MODERN-DAY INDUSTRIES AND LABS

Scientists are in a quest for the development and enhancement of life on earth and other celestial bodies. Independent industries and funded laboratories research on the most crucial and critical concepts that lead to breakthrough or even a Nobel. Most of that fields are pathogenic diseases, ailment related, agriculture, tissue engineering, environmental aspects, agriculture, food science, and more.

Leading scientists develop methods, protocols, products, and other compounds for the social betterment of society. After the development of such novel ideas, they are analyzed and assured for quality. The authority panel validates the development or theses that are proposed. The driving force for such companies is to create a biological solution that is environmentally and economically feasible. The core of such process industries is to utilize bacterial or fungal cells as a production house. The living cells are fed nutrients and the products are produced as metabolites. These are most of the bioproducts that we consume in day-to-day life.

There are other orientations where plants are studied, and various optimizations are made. Various compounds and genetic interventions are made to increase germination probability and crop yield. Considering agriculture, various genetically modified seeds reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and other variants to control alternate harmful methods.

Animal biotechnology investigates more related to the medicinal and therapeutical effects on animals. This gives a prior account of the therapeutical effects of a drug on the human system. Many cancer models and genetic disease models are studied in this aspect of biotechnology.

BIOPROCESS

Generally, a bioprocess is divided into two streams. The upstream and downstream processes. Upstream involves all that is required for fermentation or production of a bioproduct. That is the isolation and cultivation of bacterial microorganisms, the nutrients, the buffers, gaseous elements, media sterilization, and more. The process takes a specific time for production. Post-production, the products undergo harsh downstream processes. This part is especially for the enrichment of the bioproduct. This involves recovery, isolation, purification, and packaging.

Then if the products are related to healthcare and pharmaceuticals, they undergo scrutiny otherwise known as clinical trials. After all the official health and safety validation by physicians and control authorities like ICMR, FDA these products are manufactured on a large scale.

The production of such compounds and products involves various biotechnological fields like microbiology, bioprocess engineering, media production, fermentation technologies. After the production process, the bioproducts undergo various purification and packaging processes. Eventually leading it to the market. There are many technicians and engineers involved in such bioprocess and purification processes.

THE KINGMAKER

Although the field is core biology there is a lot of cross-discipline opportunities. A classic example for this aspect is, a data scientist gets to analyze the genome database and extract information from it. Also, mechanical engineers play a role in constructing fermenter vessels and other supply and effluent piping systems. Electrical and electronics play a vital role in power supply and fermenter sensors for optimal performance.

Also, there are clinical research organizations where drug designing and formulations are discussed. These organizations constitute a lead research scientist that brainstorm ideas to solve a crisis. Other Biology related fields are breweries. Alcoholic beverage productions are unique as they require time for fermentation. The time may range from one year to even ten years. Wine, mead, beer, rum, and more are some well-known products. The distilleries are other technical aspects where people get to work.

PANDEMIC CRISIS

Biotechnology plays a pivotal role in disease-oriented research. Most of the drugs that are available in the market are products of Biopharmaceutical and other Biologic companies. People only get to recognize such biology-oriented fields when there is such a pandemic or epidemic crisis. The frontline workers, physicians, and nurses played an inevitable role. However, lead research scientists, principal investigators, and other onboard technologists have also been working in developing, formulating, manufacturing vaccines and other drugs. In fact, they have been working all their life with risky biosafety levels in labs and industrial plants.

Biotechnology is a very vast field of science and technology. The field has the potential to impact all the lifeforms on earth.
