One of the constant questions when it comes to this topic is whether women or men masturbate more. Research shows that 90% of males masturbate, while about 60% of females masturbate. What is evident is that the number of women who masturbate, although it would probably be more accurate to say the number of those who admit to doing so, is increasing in line with sexual freedoms, which they fought for much later than men, and many of them continue to wage this battle, especially in the countries of the Middle East. In patriarchal circles, not only is it believed that women should not masturbate at all, but there are societies in which masturbation is considered permissible only when men are single, but that they should stop doing so by getting married. When it comes to the way they masturbate, women usually do it by stimulating the clitoris, and the smallest percentage of them use inserting various objects into the vagina as their favorite technique. If they still prefer this type of masturbation, they usually use a vibrator. Moreover, it is used much more often than a dildo which, in things like this, is a favorite device of gay men who use it for anal sex, again rather than a vibrator. The famous Masters & Johnson Institute in St. Louis, which specializes in all types of sexual research, says that in a sample of women between the ages of 18 and 35 who regularly masturbate, their preferences in this regard can be expressed in numbers: 48% of women masturbate by stimulating the clitoris by hand, 26% of them do the same only with a vibrator, 10% put a vibrator or some other object in the vagina during masturbation, 6% of them rub on an object, 4% use water massage and about 4% of them achieve arousal by simply pressing the groin. The same institute says that when researching a certain sample of members of the fairer sex, they did not find two who masturbate in the same way, and a stronger gender shows similar diversity, although it generally reveals a lower level of diversity in masturbation.

In men, masturbation in over 90% of cases involves the classic masturbation of the genitals. Some do this by using the technique of stroking the whole penis up and down, sometimes in combination with semicircular or circular movements, while some just pull his foreskin back and forth. Masturbation usually begins with light movements that, as the arousal grows, become faster and faster, and are fastest just before ejaculation.
