Where have all the sex stores and sex shops gone? To clarify, we are talking about the actual brick and mortar businesses that specialized in products for adults and couples. Over the last few years, it seems as though they have all shut down or relocated for the hundredth time. Truth is, it is not that these businesses are fully going away; most have simply moved online.

You don’t have to have a business or finance degree to figure out that it is much less expensive to operate a store online than it is to have a physical location store. Because the world is now shopping online more than ever, and many people prefer to buy adult items anonymously from the comfort of their own home… sex stores and sex shops have simply created online stores that operate worldwide and cost less to run. More customers. Same inventory. Less overhead. More profit. Yep, that just makes sense.

Adult Store and Adult Shop Next Door Competition

With the rise of platforms that allow just about anyone to create an online store, the pool of competition seemed to grow overnight. The local shops could never keep up with the hundreds of people every day that made similar- and often the exact same- products available to the public. Work from home entrepreneurs had far less expenses and could offer products at a much lower price. Because of this, shop owners had to create an online presence for their customers.

After a while of having an online version of their store, they would easily realize that the income generated online was costing them less and bringing in equal and sometime greater revenue. Forgive the pun, but competition online was stiff and a shift in the way they served customers was not only obvious… it was inevitable.

Of course, those who owned brick and mortar sex shops and sex shops have a great advantage over the next-door competition; they have not only operated an active business, but they have already been in the industry for years. Think of it this way; if a new platform opened for the career you’ve had for years, and it was being dominated by people who were just starting to learn about it… how well and how fast do you think you could succeed if you stepped onto that platform with your current knowledge?

Rare but Not Extinct

Of course, not all the adult stores and adult shops have closed their doors. Even with the recent events of the world and the global shift to e-commerce, there are those shop owners who refuse to shut down their neighborhood stores. Yes, the physical adult sex shop has become a rare thing to see nowadays, but they do still exist in some towns and cities.

After all, those who are still around know that they must compete with the online stores’ prices; including those online that used to be the competition down the street. So, if you are in the market for some adult toys, and you see a store, it may be worth the time to pull over and have a look inside. If they are being competitive with the online competition, then you can always walk out and order something when you get home. In fact, if that’s the case… that store probably will be one of the next to vanish anyway.
