Reading Customer Vibrator Reviews is Fun!

There's something titillating and fun about reading reviews for vibrators on an adult toy website

By Kevin McCormickPublished 8 days ago 4 min read

I recently spoke with a marketing person at an unnamed leading online adult toy store about helping with some web development work. So, before hopping on a Zoom call, I had to do a little research. My sex life is pretty pedestrian, so I was unfamiliar with sex toys, how they are sold online, and why a vibrator needs five more settings than I have on my toaster.

So, I opened a private browser and started clicking around:

"The Greedy Girl G-Spot Rabbit, Eve's First Thruster, My Secret Butterfly, Bendy Bunny, Shegasm Pro-Thruster..."

Wow, so many vibrators! How does one choose the right vibrator from such a plethora of options?

Well, apparently, by reading the thousands of customer reviews!

Pretty soon, I was reading deeply personal reviews from bedrooms across America, written by people identified only as “Anonymous,” “Happy Wife,” or, somewhat ominously, The Captain.” It felt like discovering a secret advice column in which everyone had abandoned shame and developed strong opinions about rechargeable batteries.

Vibrator reviews are far more entertaining than reviews for ordinary products. There are no vacuum cleaners on Amazon with fun names like, "Chocolate Thunder." Nobody mentions in their blender review that, “She came 5 times within an 45 minutes!”

Five Stars and Zero Restraint!

The five-star vibrator reviews are usually the most fun to read because people don’t hold much back. Their excitement spills into capital letters, extra exclamation points, and surprisingly candid details! A review might begin with a practical note about the vibrator noise level (Daddy, why are you shaving so late, again?) and end with a story that makes you feel as though you’ve learned quite a bit about a stranger’s Saturday night.

I appreciate that kind of honesty. Product descriptions can tell you that a vibrator is waterproof, rechargeable, and equipped with twelve settings, but customers explain what it’s actually like to use. They’ll tell you whether the buttons are hard to find in the dark, whether the lowest setting is still a little intense, or whether the buzzing sound can be heard through a closed bedroom door. Those small details are often more helpful than the official list of features from the manufacturer.

"Got a free rabbit vibrator with my latest order of toys!" Wow, I wonder how much you spend on vibrators?!

The Drama of a 1 or 2-Star Vibrator Review

The negative reviews can be even more interesting. People tend to get very specific when something doesn’t live up to expectations. Maybe the charger is unreliable, the controls feel awkward, or the toy is much louder than advertised.

There’s something refreshing about the straightforward way reviewers describe what went wrong, although it's sad to think of their disappointing experience, or dud of a night. I mean, this gadget has one job, right?

How does the gadget that just does one thing fail to badly? Did it not vibrate?

Question: Also, why do so many people thumbs-down these great vibrator reviews? What were they hoping for? Better grammar? Family-friendly illustrations? Are there people out there on morality crusades doing this to uphold 19th-Century Obscenity Laws?

Vibrator Reviews from Couples? Yes, Please!

"Hey, honey, if you have a few minutes, I thought we could write a review for that vibrator I bought last week!"

I especially enjoy the reviews written by couples because they offer little glimpses into real relationships. Some mention finding a new spark after many years together. Others describe a toy becoming a birthday surprise, a vacation experiment, or simply something fun to try on an otherwise ordinary weekend.

Once in a while, there's something really personal, like how the husband can't get an erection anymore because of his cancer medication. (Sad. Now I feel weird!) The details can be playful and sexy. Either way, it's like a tiny taste of saucy reality TV.

Note: I find myself imagining these vibrator reviews are written by gorgeous, shapely 30-something women whose husbands are deployed in the Navy, or something.

Like, the woman who wrote the review for the Bendy Bunny Vibrator is probably a blonde wearing little pajama boy-shorts, staring at the horizon with a glass of wine in her delicate hand, wondering when her husband will finally return to satisfy her. If, God forbid, he doesn't, I could surely console her... Ah, yes - I can taste her salty tears right now. Oops, I mean... nevermind!

The Reviews are Practical, Too... I Guess

Of course, the reviews serve a practical purpose too. They can tell you whether a toy is quiet, comfortable to hold, easy to clean, or needlessly complicated. That’s useful information when so many products look fairly similar on the screen.

Still, usefulness is only part of the appeal. Vibrator reviews are fun because people become remarkably honest when they can write under a made-up or "anonymous" username. What you get is part shopping advice, part personal story, and a little more information than you expected.

OK, now that I am no longer a timid virgin in the world of vibrator reviews, I must soldier on and keep exploring. Time to raise the stakes, man up, and read some dildo reviews!

If you have a few minutes, I highly recommend that you scroll through some vibrator reviews yourself. It's fun and a little naughty!
