Sex Life - Netflix

Sex Life was premiered on Netflix on the 25th of June 2021. It is a comedy-drama with IMBD ratings of 5.9/10. The story revolves around a married woman trapped in her wild past when she was free to do anything she wanted, especially sex, ‘the best sex with her ex-boyfriend. We see flashbacks of her past as well as her present life where she is struggling in her marriage. It is an eight-episode series and every episode has the same pattern of flashbacks vs present life.

Here is why I think Sex Life is not worth watching as it has some major cringe flaws which left me kind of disturbed.

A Wife with a Wild Past

As the title suggests, Sex Life is all about sex. A married woman named Billie is having trouble in her married life because her husband isn’t able to give her the sex that her ex-boyfriend gave her. Billie’s husband is rich, they have two adorable kids and they live in a big mansion in the Greenwich suburbs. However, that’s not enough for Billie because she misses her past life in New York. In her past life she was a wild party girl who used to have;

“Contorted into at least 73% of the positions in the Kama Sutra. As should we all. There were rich guys, poor guys, Tattooed guys, just flying through guys, and every other kind of bad boy deliciousness you can imagine.”

A Sweet Stalker Husband

Billie wanted to have wild sex with her husband Cooper, but Cooper was a simple vanilla guy always busy with work. So, Billie decides to write in a journal on a laptop about her ex-boyfriend Brad who was the best sex partner of her life. She started to think about the times they used to have wild sex and she wrote about it all in her journal, every minute detail. Of course, she doesn’t bother to lock her laptop, put a password, or hide the journal. Instead, she just leaves it there for Cooper to read. After Cooper reads it he started to have sex with her the way Brad used to do it. It is just too bizarre to watch. In the end, Billie is never happy, it is not enough for her because she wants Brad.

Cooper doesn’t talk to Billie about the journal, instead, he tries to imitate Brad, and then we see a cringing scene where Cooper is masturbating to his wife’s Journal (in which she was having sex with someone else). Then Cooper starts to stalk Brad to the point where he buys a $600 per month membership of a luxury gym. There we see him checking out Brad’s boxing skills and then when Brad decides to take shower, Cooper follows him. After that, we see something that explains why the show is 18+, yes, we see Cooper’s hanging mouth as he checks out Brad’s private part. It is quite evident the guy is gay for Brad.

Later, it became clear that he is not gay, but he is jealous of Brad because he loves his wife and wants to have a normal life with her. Brad can’t stop thinking about Billie as well (whereas hooking up with her best friend at the same time).

An Obsession with Sex

Moreover, Billie becomes so obsessed that she starts to write about Brad every day, all the juicy details and it frustrates her so much that she cries all the time. She has tears in her eyes all the time because she misses having sex with Brad. I just found it so annoying. She is literally ignoring her sweet kids because all the time we see flashbacks of her past life. She is totally stuck in the past with no way out.

“Maybe he is a God, but the flesh is all too real. ‘Cause he is wearing me on his body. On his skin. Still.”

When the rich mommies decide to leave their kids to nannies and go to the city for a girls’ day out, they force Billie to join them too. Billie goes to New York after ten years apparently and she loses it completely. She starts crying in front of the other ladies and starts blabbering about how much she misses her ex and can’t stop thinking about him. They sympathize with her and give her a fake Chanel bag to make her happy. Pfftt. I found the scene weirdly disturbing and stretched.

When Cooper is really sick of it all and confronts Billie, Billie proposes the most stupid idea ever. To prove to Cooper that she is not hanging out with Brad, she tells him that Brad is now in a relationship with her best friend, that’s why she arranges a dinner, more like a double date between Cooper, Billie, and Brad, Sasha. The dinner turns out to be such a HUGE mess. I hated that scene and was so frustrated by Billie’s poor acting and how she was faking to be happy with her husband whereas it was obvious that she was totally smitten by Brad.

Anyway, there are tons of other exasperating scenes, but I’m not going to spoil it all for you. I mean, Brad having sex with Billie’s best friend while Billie was on FaceTime watching the whole thing, what the actual beep. I will be honest with you, it is such a bad series, full of loopholes, poor acting, and annoyingly frustrating scenes.

I’m just unable to digest the highly illogical, nonsensical and messy show called Sex Life. I didn’t even watch the last two episodes because of the headache that it caused me. You should watch it to know whether it’s your type or not, maybe you will like it. Who knows, maybe you can relate to it.
