Part 2

It was senior year and Sylvia Taylor, Wes Hamilton, Lana Thomas, Chris Shaefer, Greg Straton, Denise Brown and Wes’ brother Dwayne, who was a year younger, were as thick as thief’s. They all did everything together. It was no wonder a couple of them dated and others had the biggest crushes on the other.

Sylvia and Wes were a part of the group and good friends that ended up having crushes on each other by the time they graduated, but neither of them told the other. Sylvia and her boyfriend had broken up and then she started to see Wes in a different light. Wes never got serious with anyone because of his feelings for her.

Chris and Denise dated for a few months during junior year, but decided that thy were better as friends than they were a couple. Dwayne however, had the biggest crush on Denise, but never approached her eraser he figured she would think the same way about him that she did Chris. So, he kept his feelings to himself and stayed her friend.

Lana and Greg had been dating since freshman year. They were homecoming king and queen junior and senior year. Everyone expected the to get marred, if not right after high school, then on after while they were in college. Lana played third base in softball and guard on the basketball team. Greg was on his way to college on a full football scholarship to Duke University as their new quarterback. The NFL looked to be in his future.

As Lana and Greg were getting ready to graduate, it looked like the super couple was just that, a super couple that would never let anything like college and distance stop them from being together. At least that’s what it looked like on the outside. On the inside of their relationship it was a different story.

At first it was arguments because she decided to go to the University of Florida instead following him to Duke University. He couldn’t understand why she just wouldn’t go with him. He didn’t understand that this was always her dream, just like the NFL was his. But they kept up appearances through graduation, even to their closest friends.

On graduation night, the gang had gotten together and hung out at the beach. Everyone was drinking and having a good time, except for Lana.

Lana, Sylvia, and Denise were all standing at the edge of the water letting the waves hit their feet while they watched the guys standing around the bonfire.

“Lana, what’s going on with you tonight?” Denise asked her.

“I really don’t feel like talking about it right now, guys,” Lana said to Denise and Sylvia.

“Come on Lana, talk to us. There is something really bothering you. We just walked across the stage from graduating high school and you are not happy at all. We have all been talking about how excited we are our whole senior year, and even part of our junior year,” Sylvia said as she put her hand on Lana’s arm.

“I know,” Lana said as she stared at Greg. Then the tears started flowing. “Greg and I decided to break up. We have been talking about it for weeks now. There is just too much distance between our colleges for us to put the pressure on each other to keep our relationship together and focus on school. We said that if it was meant to be, then we would find our way back to each other. But it doesn’t make it hurt any less. I am heartbroken.”

“We are so sorry,” Sylvia said and Denise chimed in, “What can we do?”

“Nothing, guys, just be here,” Lana replied.

The rest of the night went in a blur for Lana. Greg couldn’t take his eyes off of her. He told the guys what they had decided. No one could believe it and neither could he. He never imagined they would not be together.

For the remainder of the summer, they tried to stay away from each other to make it easier when they left for college, but they were not successful. It was clear to Greg and to Lana, that there would never be anyone else for either of them. They just had to get through the next four years and then they would be together again, some way, some how.
