The sun, a benevolent golden eye in the cerulean sky, dappled through the leaves of the ancient, gnarled tree, painting shifting patterns of light and shadow across Jennie’s skin. She lay stretched out on the generous expanse of her woven blanket, a canvas of vibrant blues and greens against the pale sand. The gold bikini shimmered with every subtle shift of her breath, a second skin that did little to truly conceal the opulent curve of her breasts – a fact that brought a quiet smile to her lips. She liked that. She liked the way the fabric hugged her, the hint of playful rebellion it offered against full coverage.

A gentle breeze, carrying the faint tang of salt and distant sunscreen, toyed with the ends of her hair, tickling her bare shoulders. She closed her eyes, savoring the warmth, the languid peace of this secluded spot. It was their spot, a little pocket of paradise they’d discovered on their last trip, far enough from the main beach to offer privacy, yet close enough to hear the murmur of the waves.

Her internal clock, finely tuned to Pete’s habits, told her he should be here soon. A little flutter, like a trapped butterfly, stirred in her stomach. It wasn’t just the warmth of the sun that flushed her cheeks; it was the thought of him. Pete, with his easy smile and his hands that knew exactly how to make her hum.

She imagined him, striding down the beach, his silhouette growing larger against the sparkling horizon. She pictured the way his eyes would crinkle at the corners when he saw her, the slow, appreciative sweep of his gaze over her form. Her lips parted slightly, a soft sigh escaping. The blanket, truly large enough for two, felt expansive and a little empty without him. She traced the intricate pattern of the weave with a lazy finger, a silent invitation laid out for his arrival. The warmth of the sand beneath her, the gentle lull of the ocean, the anticipation thrumming beneath her skin – it was all a prelude, a slow, delicious build-up to the moment Pete would finally drop beside her, his presence a comforting weight, his touch an electric spark. The shade from the tree was welcome, but she knew the real heat was yet to come.

"Jennie!"

Jennie’s head snapped up from the novel she hadn't truly been reading. A broad, genuine smile bloomed on her face, a physical manifestation of the joy bubbling inside her. Pete, her Pete, stood in the doorway, a vision of relaxed strength in swim trunks and a damp, slightly clinging t-shirt that hinted at a recent dip in the ocean. Her heart, which had been steadily beating in anticipation for the past two hours since he'd texted he was back from his dive, gave a happy lurch.

"Hi," she breathed, pushing herself up from the plush sun lounger. Before he could even take another step, she was in his arms, her body molding against his as if designed to fit there. The scent of salt, sunscreen, and that uniquely Pete musk filled her senses. She rose on her toes, capturing his lips in a kiss that was both eager and deep, a silent conversation of I missed you and finally. His arms, strong and familiar, wrapped around her waist, pulling her impossibly closer until no daylight could exist between them.

"Glad to see you," she murmured against his mouth, her fingers tangling in the damp strands of his hair at the nape of his neck. The feeling of his stubble against her cheek was a welcome roughness, a delicious reminder of his presence.
