The clatter of cutlery and the murmur of conversation were the usual soundtrack to our Friday night dinners at The Gilded Spoon. Tonight, however, an entirely different kind of hum vibrated beneath the surface, emanating directly from Holly across the table. Her eyes, usually a calm hazel, danced with a mischievous glint as she leaned in, her voice a low, throaty purr.
“Bored, are we?” she teased, her foot lightly brushing mine under the tablecloth. It wasn't the first time she'd played these little games, but there was a new intensity to her gaze tonight.
I offered a noncommittal shrug, a smile playing on my lips. “Just enjoying the ambiance, Holly.”
She chuckled, a rich, warm sound that made the hairs on my arms prickle. Then, her eyes dropped to her lap, and with a deliberate, almost theatrical slowness, she spread her legs a fraction wider. The movement was subtle, yet charged.
“Well,” she whispered, her voice dropping another octave, "why don't you make the ambiance a little more interesting?” Her gaze, now firmly fixed on mine, held an unmistakable dare. “Go on,” she urged, a playful challenge lighting her features. “Take a peek. Underneath.”
My heart gave an unbidden lurch. Holly was known for her audacity, but this was a new level of public private flirtation. The restaurant was bustling, but our table offered a degree of intimacy, tucked away in a quiet alcove. Still, the thought of what she was suggesting, here, now…
My gaze flickered around the room, then back to her. She simply watched me, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips, her legs still subtly parted. The dare was clear.
A slow grin spread across my face. What was life without a little calculated risk? Lowering my head, as if reaching for something I'd dropped, I ducked below the crisp white linen of the tablecloth. The world above became muffled, replaced by the hushed sounds of the restaurant’s floor.
And then I saw it. Or rather, I didn't see it.
The soft fabric of her floral dress billowed slightly, framing her inner thighs. The smooth curve of her skin, the gentle shadow, the utter, undeniable absence of any lace or silk. My breath hitched.
A wave of heat, both surprised and electrifying, washed over me. It was so brazen, so utterly her. The audacity, the trust, the sheer thrill of it. I stayed there for a beat longer than necessary, just absorbing the sight, the knowledge.
When I finally straightened up, trying to appear nonchalant, my eyes met hers across the table. Her smile had widened, a triumphant, almost predatory glint in her eyes. There was no need for words. The message, clear and potent, had been delivered and received. The dinner, I realized, had just become a lot more interesting. And I had a feeling it would be more exciting than I think it would.
The hum of the restaurant was a dull thrum beneath the clinking of cutlery and the murmur of polite conversation. Holly, across the small, linen-draped table, was recounting some anecdote about her terrible boss, her eyes sparkling with indignation, a stray strand of dark hair falling across her cheek. I was half-listening, nodding in the right places, when her left hand, which had been resting innocently on her lap, found its way to my thigh.
It was a feather-light touch at first, a barely-there brush against the denim of my jeans. Then, with a boldness that sent a jolt straight through me, her fingers curled around the discernible bulge, her thumb beginning a slow, deliberate stroke. My breath hitched. My smile, which moments before had been a polite acknowledgement of her story, felt suddenly frozen, a mask over the rapidly accelerating beat of my heart.
