In the hallway, Lena froze. Her hand, which had been reaching for her own doorknob, stopped dead in mid-air. Her head snapped up, her eyes wide, fixed on Tyler’s door. The scream, raw and undeniably feminine, hung in the air, a visceral punctuation mark to the insistent creaking that had preceded it. It was a sound she hadn't expected, a sound that was far too loud, far too. exposed. She stood there, rooted to the spot, a silent witness to a scene she wasn't meant to hear, her heart beginning to pound a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The creaking continued for a beat longer, then abruptly ceased, leaving an even more profound silence in its wake.
Lena, a picture of controlled fury, her arms still crossed over her chest, regarded Taylor and Tyler with a gaze that could strip paint. Her initial explosion had given way to a chilling, almost surgical calm.
“Pretty much since you moved in?” Lena repeated slowly, her voice dangerously low. She pushed herself off the doorframe, taking a step into the room. The movement felt like an earthquake. “So, for six months? You’ve been in my house, eating my food, acting like my best friend, all while you’ve been with my man?” Her eyes, sharp and accusatory, flicked between Taylor, who was still fumbling with a sheet, and Tyler, who had at least managed to pull on his boxers.
Taylor finally got the sheet around her, though it did little to cover the blush that burned across her face. “Lena, please, we didn’t mean for any of this to happen. It just did.”
“‘It just did’?” Lena scoffed, a humorless sound. “Things don’t ‘just do,’ Taylor. People make choices. And you two,” she gestured wildly between them, “you made some pretty disgusting choices.” She turned her full attention to Tyler. “And you, Tyler. My boyfriend. The man I was planning a future with. Do you have anything to say for yourself, or are you just going to let her take all the blame?”
Tyler finally met Lena’s eyes, his face a mixture of shame and something akin to defiance. “Lena, I. I know I messed up. Terribly. There’s no excuse. But what Taylor said, it’s true. It wasn't planned. We were both. stupid. We both made a mistake.”
“A mistake?” Lena’s voice cracked then, a hint of the deep pain beneath her anger finally surfacing. “Six months of ‘mistakes’? You call betraying me, in my own home, every single night, a ‘mistake’?” Her eyes welled with tears, but she blinked them back, refusing to break. She looked at Taylor. "And you, my best friend. The one I confided in. The one I told everything to. You just watched me, didn't you? Let me gush about him, about us, all while you were sleeping with him behind my back."
Taylor’s throat tightened. “Lena, we both know this is wrong,” she repeated, her voice barely a whisper, the words now imbued with a different, heavier meaning. It wasn't just about the act itself, but the entire, elaborate deception. The betrayal. Lena stared at them both, the weight of their words and actions finally settling into the silence. The tangled threads of their lives, once so neatly woven, were now irrevocably severed, laid bare and ugly for all to see. The question of what would happen next hung heavy in the air, a chilling promise of the painful unraveling to come.
Tyler and Taylor lay tangled in the sheets, their earlier argument having dissolved into a heavy silence. A knock on the door, soft but insistent, broke the spell. Tyler looked at Taylor, a question in his eyes, but before either could answer, the door creaked open.
