"Tough practice today," Julia said, her voice a low murmur as she turned, a soft towel wrapped around her chest. Her eyes, a startling shade of blue, met Camille's across the emptying room. A warmth bloomed in Camille’s chest, spreading rapidly.
"Yeah," Camille managed, her voice a little rougher than intended. She averted her gaze for a moment, then found herself drawn back to Julia, who was now reaching for her clothes. As Julia bent to pull on her sweatpants, the towel slipped just a fraction, revealing a glimpse of tanned skin, the curve of a breast. It was fleeting, but it solidified the unarticulated desire that had been simmering beneath Camille’s surface for weeks.
Julia straightened, her eyes still on Camille, a soft, knowing smile playing on her lips. She took a step, then another, until she was standing directly in front of Camille, the small space between them crackling with unspoken words. Camille’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat.
Then, Julia’s hand reached out, not to her arm or her shoulder, but to her chin, tilting her head slightly. Their eyes locked again, and this time, there was no escaping the intensity of the moment. Julia leaned in, slowly, deliberately, and Camille’s eyes fluttered shut as their lips met.
It was a soft kiss at first, exploratory, tasting of mint and the lingering saltiness of sweat. Then, Julia’s free hand, warm and firm, slipped under Camille’s loose t-shirt, brushing against her bare skin. Camille gasped softly into the kiss as Julia's fingers found the curve of her breast, gently kneading, tracing the outline of her nipple through the thin fabric of her bra. A jolt of pure, unadulterated pleasure shot through Camille, making her knees tremble. The world narrowed to Julia’s touch, her scent, the pressure of her lips.
Just as the kiss deepened, a distant door slammed shut, echoing through the empty locker room. Julia pulled back, her eyes still heavy-lidded, a faint flush coloring her cheeks. Her hand lingered for a moment, a teasing pressure, then slipped away.
"We should go," Julia whispered, her voice a little breathless.
Camille could only nod, her own breath still catching in her throat. The heat of Julia’s touch still burned on her skin, a tantalizing memory. They dressed in a hushed silence, the unspoken question of what had just happened, and what might happen next, hanging tantalizingly in the air between them. As they walked out of the locker room, the autumn chill felt strangely welcome, a cool contrast to the fire Julia had ignited within her.
The silence in the apartment was deafening, amplified by the absence of Julia's usual cheerful chatter. Camille traced the rim of her untouched tea, the steam long gone. "A small break," Julia had called it, her voice strained, a polite euphemism for "we need space because I’m annoyed with you.” Camille sighed, pushing away the image of Julia's flushed face during their argument about… well, it felt trivial now.
Her phone felt heavy in her hand. Who did you call when your steady relationship hit a minor, yet emotionally jarring, speed bump? Not Julia’s friends, not her own mutuals. Then, a name surfaced, a warmth blooming in her chest that had nothing to do with the cooled tea: Oliver.
She hadn't spoken to him in months, maybe even a year. Their friendship had been an easy, comfortable thing in college, full of shared jokes and late-night study sessions that often devolved into philosophical debates. He’d been a steady presence, a good listener. And, if she was honest, he’d always had a certain easy charm she’d found attractive, though she'd never acted on it.
