Chapter two. Trail of Innocence.

Sofia awake the next morning to the sound of rain falling heavily against the glass of the bedroom window of her hotel room. She found it hard to pull herself from the warmth of her bed knowing that the winter chill was bitterly cold to the bone, but managed to leave the warmth and comfort of her bed and began to wash and prepare herself for what could be her life sentence.

Part of her was considering running away but she knew that the Kaiser already clearly saw that Sofia was not the traitor and it could be a fair enough trail as she had enough evidence for her own innocence, but even with all the information that Sofia had collected in order to save her name and life, she still felt like she could be risking her life with the trail should it turn sour.

Sofia sat at the small dressing table neatly placed to one side of the hotel room, she was observing herself in the mirror trying to understand who she still was, let alone why Manfred had called her beautiful. She knew that Manfred had been right as Sofia was a stunningly beautiful women, yet she had become numb to her own beauty, she was unaware when she had fully became numb to her looks, but thought it must of started when her loyalty was put into question by her fellow spy in London, probably not long before he had tried to have her arrested by the British authorities.

Just as her small clock chimed twenty to nine there was a loud knock upon the door of her hotel room, as she once again stood up opening the door fully to see the two guards that had been assigned to keep an eye on her and keep her safe, they were stood before her in their formal dark blue uniforms. It was clear that they were ready to take Sofia to the court that was only few minuets walk away from the hotel and Sofia knew that even they had to look presentable far more than their usual uniform.

Like the night before Sofia's guards were careful not to allow her to be seen by too many of the local aerodrome personnel or towns folk, they had rather expected that Sofia might become at risk should too many people begin to gather round her. The guards lead her safety to the court house which the Kaiser and his chosen court members stood awaiting her arrival, there was already a large gathering of press personal, who clearly had all been invited to document the court proceedings.

Sofia paid homage to the Kaiser showing him as much respect as she could while he sat upon the high seat of the court room looking down upon Sofia, his court members seemed to begin preparing their files that were all filled with the full reports of the investigation that had taken place over the past few weeks all about Sofia her life and her career. All she could do was to sit in silence waiting for the questions to be fired upon her like the bullets of a gun from the trenches, in a strange way she wondered if the trenchers were a more justifiable location that this court room.

The first hour of the trail was held in what seemed cruel vanity, Sofia was asked about her childhood and although this had been a question she had expect, it was rather a miserable topic for her to speak about, but one that showed her loyalty to her kith and kin. She had dreaded speaking of her childhood even though it had been good for the most part, although there were elements of it that left the taste of ash in her mouth.

Her father had been a wealth noble men and had fallen for the beauty of a farmers daughter, which was Sofia's mother. Her mother although coming from a somewhat poorer background, had been betrothed to another man but willingly choose Sofia's father over that other man. Sofia, as well as her older brother Wilhelm, had been born in the safety of her grandfathers estate. They had been raised in reasonable comfort, however during one winter when Sofia was nine years old, her father was caught with one of the maids of the household, to which her mother was charged with the murder of not just Sofia's own father but also the housemaid he had been caught with. This to Sofia was not a topic any of her family spoke of, as they thought her mother was rather unhinged ever since Sofia's birth and it was no secret that Sofia's mother had been highly medicated and rather poorly that same year when she had killed Sofia's father.

It was from that day on that Sofia and her brother were raised by their Grandfather more closely, who was a good friend of the Kaiser.

Sofia and Wilhelm by all sense of the word, were brought up in a strongly blue blood family and as children their summers were filled with hunting events, horse riding and tours though the state as they traveled with their Grandfather.

Wilhelm was sent off for military training at twelve years old, while Sofia remained at the family home studying when her grandfather was not traveling, however while Sofia was at her family estate did not stop her continued love of hunting and often would ride out with the hunting master to catch a few birds or rabbits, much to the annoyance of her tutor.

Sofia talked of her childhood as if it was some fairy-tale, but it was true to everything that had been known of her up bringing. She then explained that her adolescence was often filled with judgments from family friends, due to her rather male dominated upbringing. She was often considered not very 'lady-like' and yet she still showed her abilities as a young lady with skills in sewing, piano and dance.

The Kaiser himself seemed uninterested by her tale of her younger years, as he himself knew of her younger self and witnessed first hand how she was. So the Kaiser asked about when Sofia joined the imperial intelligence core and if she herself could explain her journey though the past few months. Sofia for a moment sat completely still in her chair, although the Kaiser knew many of the operations she had worked on, she could not talk openly about all their details as that itself would be treason. Sofia looked up at the Kaiser as she gave a faint smile and explained that she could not go in to all the details, due to the delicate nature of the work she had done for the high secretary operations she had been involved in.

This led the group of court members sat before her to murmur among themselves, yet the Kaiser smiled and his rosy cheeks were clearly due to the fact he was rather proud of the fact Sofia was showing her loyalty as she did indeed hold top secret information, even though her own loyalty at this time was being questioned it was clear she was still holding her secrets of duties preformed. He nodded his head as an understanding for her to continue in whatever way she needed to, this would be in order to continue to answer the questions asked of her by the court.

Sofia then began by explaining that she had been invited to join the red cross to help with field hospitals, yet this was not to her skill set or own interest and although she could mend wounds with stitches and bandages with no fear of seeing blood or war wounds, she knew that she was more observant, and had discovered some rather alarming information during the first few days in her medical training. She willingly went to the imperial intelligence core with this information, however at the time they were too busy with other affairs of state security. Sofia quoted one man from the imperial intelligence core telling her that 'should you have this information, then you yourself will have to investigate it further, for our ears and eyes are busy else where.' And so that is exactly what she did, she did not stop to consider the consequence's should she have failed, but it was due to her efforts that she uncovered one of the largest underground movements, to which this then titled her above and beyond the skill of most man who were already in the imperial intelligence core. It was due to her discovery that she was assigned on a more permanent bases within the imperial intelligence core and during an award ceremony, to which she had been observed dancing with Manfred Von Richthofen, that she was called away on duty, it had been at this event that Sofia had been instructed to go to London and observe in a more front line position.

Sofia admitted that she was in London for a grand total of two weeks and during that time she had become concerned that information was being handing to London officers from within the imperial intelligence core itself. At this moment Sofia notice the men of the court before her all look at the letters, before handing them to the Kaiser, who in turn looked at them himself. Sofia explained that she had written many letters to the Kaiser himself discussing that there was a spy among the core, and she feared that it may be the partner she had been assigned to work with on the assignment in London, she had also written letters to her main head officer about the unnerving evidence she had noticed.

At this point Sofia could not explain the fear she felt, she was calling out the person who was trying to frame her and she wondered if she truly had enough evidence to win her own freedom back. None the less Sofia continued as she began explaining that during her time in London her fellow comrade, Hans, seemed to have a strange collection of medals all of which were for British soldiers. Sofia had questioned him about this as she found it rather odd and he openly said that his time in London was well used and that his medals were rewards for his efforts within the British service. It was on this piece of information that Sofia once again wrote to the Kaiser and to her officer in command, as she claimed that their own assignment had been compromised and that she would be returning to Germany as soon as possible with information that had now endangered those working on the front line assignment and that she herself could name the traitor.

It was with this final letter that had been sent that Sofia knew her time was more limited in safety, she took what she needed as evidence against Hans secretly from his residence in London while he had been away from his dwelling. Sofia was no fool and knew should she have been captured that the evidence would be lost, so she had sent the evidence straight to the Kaiser with a letter reading 'please see my previous letter.' However on her return to her own dwelling in London, she realized armed officers were outside her residence and she was arrested having little time to think of anyway to escape. Sofia had been purely lucky in her escape as a guard had foolishly left her cell door open after one of her interrogations, which had allowed her to be able to make her escape which she wasted no time in getting away quickly from London. She gained access to a cabin upon a cruise ship under a fake name, which enabled her to return to her beloved homeland. It was upon her arrival back in Germany when she got to Berlin that she was arrested under suspicion of being a traitor and that is when all the investigations began.

The Kaiser and the rest of the court members that sat either side of him seem convinced of what Sofia was saying, at this point they choose to take a break, while leaving Sofia alone in her seat with the invited press getting as much details down on their note pads. As the court members all adjourned off to a private room to discuss what Sofia had indeed told them and whether or not it lined up with what was investigated over the past month.

The court members seemed to have been gone for quite sometime and when they did reappear, the Kaiser looked directly at Sofia his eyes seemed almost joyful yet hidden beneath a coolness as he announced with a swift upbeat tone in his voice. “We find you Sofia innocent of any crimes against the state and Kaiser.” Sofia could not believe her ears and for a moment she gazed at the Kaiser almost in disbelieve, before a smile brighten her face with get joy and relieve knowing she was truly free and innocent.

Sofia bowed to court members and to the Kaiser before thanking them, then quickly leaving the court room, she took a moment to breath in the the cold winter air as she watched the gathered press who had all watched the proceedings of the court as they now all rush off in hopes to get their stories in the next news report of the papers, hoping at least one of their stories would indeed gain access to the last paper of the day.

For the first time in weeks Sofia walked without the guards that she had suffered as extra shadows, her footsteps now seemed to have more of a spring that she had not had for sometime. She knew it would be some time before people of the state got the news that she was innocent and now she should be free of any more propaganda and scandalous titles or judgments of the press. She knew that it would only be that afternoon that still stopped her from enjoy the comfort of a café and hot coffee or tea.

Sofia continued walking through the street as she headed back to the hotel, yet as she walked she heard the roar of engines over head, looking up to see the clear forms of the most loved pilots of Germany, Jasta 2. Sofia knew that one of those planes above her would be under the control of Manfred, as she watched for a moment looking to were they seemed to be flying, they seemed to be going away from the aerodrome. Manfred had been right as they did seem to fly so much higher than what she had imagined and she knew she would be nothing but an ant if he looked down into the town below him, he would not know her from the crowd that watched within the street below. Deep down she wished and almost prayed that he and his comrades came home safely that they would have success and that they themselves were safe.

When Sofia arrived back at her hotel room she once again sat at her little dressing table beginning to write letters of her new found innocence. One to her grandfather who would no doubt be proud to hear the news from her of the verdict of innocence, another letter to Manfred's father, Major Albrecht Von Richthofen as he had been kind enough to write to her during the past month keeping her informed of her Grandfathers health.

It was while Sofia was walking down to the front desk of the hotel to have the letters sent to the addresses neatly written on their envelopes, that she once again heard the roar of energies from up above, as she stepped to a near by window seeing the same number of planes once again returning from their patrol of the skies. As she quickly asked the man on the front desk that the letters were to be sent in the last post to arrive that following morning, before she began wandering out of the hotel to her awaiting Vauxhall D-type auto-mobile.

It was her grandfathers vehicle which he had allowed her to drive when she had informed him that she was able to live outside the prison camp, but with two armed guards. Sofia sat within the cold leather seat of the vehicle with the wheel in front of her as she began to drive up to the aerodrome along the uncomfortable bumpy road.

It was rather a shock to many of the man at the aerodrome to see a women driving, let alone a women at the aerodrome. But to Sofia's surprise the Kaiser was already there, greeting the pilots upon their safe return. The pilots seemed to all huddle round the Kaiser with proud beaming smiles upon their rosy faces, as they spoke of their successful flight. Sofia edge carefully near to the group as she over heard them talking with great victorious joy.

But one voice stood out over the others, Manfred's own voice sounded as though he seemed to command the strength and heroic pride, his voice almost carried a burning strength that was unquestionable and lead his comrades with praise and passion for their careers, even if it seemed that they could die everytime they took flight. But they almost seemed to make a mockery of death by gladly glancing chance with each dog fight they engaged.

The group suddenly fell silent when they saw Sofia stood nearby as Manfred and the Kaiser who both had their backs towards Sofia, turned slowly to see her stood rather timidly upon the grounds of the aerodrome. The Kaiser seemed almost intrigued to see the now innocent Sofia stood before him once again that very same day, as she smiled softly blushing as she stood near the group of men in front of her and although she was currently a little timid, which was unlike her as she was usually so sure of herself and quite strong in her appearance around others, she knew she wished to speak with the one friend that had seemed so distant yet so near to her.

Sofia looked at Manfred as the Kaiser warmly announce who she was, a few of lesser ranking officers all made murmurs and whispers of their judgments, but this did not stand them in good faith in front of Manfred who was a higher ranking officer to them, or to the Kaiser who then informed those who had been murmuring of Sofia's innocence of her recent traitorous behavior that they themselves best watch their own actions around her. Manfred had glanced across at his fellow comrades with a harsh glare to silence them instantly while the Kaiser had spoken rather harshly to them, Manfred then looked back at the rather nervous women before him as he smiled warmly in order to give her some comfort.

“To what do I owe this rather unexpected pleasure Sofia?” Manfred asked as his eyes watched her carefully as she stepped closure to the group of men. “Manfred, may I please speak with you, privately?” Sofia asked it was clear that her voice was showing how timid and uneasy she was, let alone the fact that she had used his first name rather than his surname which showed their close friendship, this alone unnerved some of the other members of Jasta 2 apart from Lothar, Manfred's younger brother, who merely smiled to himself see Sofia show no free towards Manfred or the Kaiser.

Manfred could tell something was truly bothering Sofia about being round so many people, let alone the Kaiser once again that day. At this point Manfred felt sorry for Sofia, he had not seen her this timid since the first time he had met her when they were both teenagers, so he stepped forward taking hold of her left hand before gently leading her away from the large group of people while speaking gently as he walked with her trying to calm her nerves. They both ignored the looks from those around them at the aerodrome, Manfred knew that he would not hear the end of it however, as many of the men would question him about Sofia and he quite expected a few jokes that would be rather rude and crude to be played on him. But they would be done in light-hearted laughter with no ill intent meant, such was the way of life within the pilots home. He led Sofia to a small building the other side of the aerodrome next to the hospital ward, this building was to all that could tell by the small amount of equipment, a rather small kitchen. It was clear that the men at war clearing suffered from living with little good food made for them, many of the men having to cook for themselves which was sometimes more trouble than blessing.

From what Sofia could see the men seemed to live out of tinned food, which they could easily pour into pans, however Manfred was a blessing to many of the aerodrome as he would often take his days off to go hunting, which meant there was meat such as elk and boar, although some of the other men would go fishing and there was at least one meal every few weeks that was served as fish. Sofia could see a few plucked birds hung up on hooks, they were clearly draining before being fully gutted and prepared for cooking yet it was clear they had not been Manfred's catch, but had come from one of the local farmers.

Sofia was rather glad to see a warm stove, which had a flat top and it was clear that this was the aerodromes cooking appliance and although the fire within the stove burned brightly with its strongly fearsome heat, there was a black kettle on the flat top which began whistling loudly. Clearly someone had observed the pilots return from their flight and was preparing them large mugs of warm drinks, yet there was no one within the small make shift building to actually finish preparing these large mugs of drinks.

Sofia did not think twice as she took hold of the large kettle with a folded cloth and began pouring the hot water into a large mug while she observed it's contents become a dark chocolate, she then added a little milk from a near by jug and handed it to Manfred, who welcomed the mug of dark chocolate with great delight as his hands clutched the cup to gather warmth.

“So what is it you wished to speak with me about?” Manfred asked as he held the mug in his hands, his fingers clearly cold as they looked somewhat blue, almost turning red as he clutched the mug tighter in his hands. Manfred had been very much aware of the men around the aerodrome as most of them had very openly and rather crudely leered at Sofia as he had led her to this small building. She was indeed beautiful and no one could shake that from Manfred's own mind, she had the grace that could easily shake the world of any unsuspected man, yet her timid behaviour was alien to Manfred as he was so used to her confidence that seeing her so uneasy was rather shocking to him. But he could understand why as she was as it was probably because she was still getting over the shock of not only being told she was innocent of crimes she did not commit, but also knowing she was free to live a new life now. But Manfred knew, like Sofia knew, she would be unable to re-join the imperial intelligence core or any service of war other than that of the medical services. And although Manfred had indeed wanted to know the outcome of her trail, he would of rather heard it from her own lips, not the Kaiser. But the Kaiser had taken such pride for his own success and that it could not allow Manfred to be disheartened, after all the Kaiser's word was law.

Sofia was becoming more nervous by the second she hadn't really come up to the aerodrome with a plan of how she was going to talk with Manfred, she merely wanted to spend time with him but she feared that would make her seem a little strange, if not a little demanding of his time and she knew it would be unbecoming of her. Sofia gazed at Manfred as she knew she would have to say something but was unsure what to really tell him, so with a gentle smile she began to speak. “I was planning on coming here to tell you the outcome of the trail, however it seems that the Kaiser has rather spoiled my delight in telling you.” She said as though she herself was almost trying to make light of the fact that the Kaiser had rather killed her ability to have a reason to be at the aerodrome, which left her not really knowing why she had travelled there.

Manfred set the large mug of hot chocolate down on a nearby table that he was stood beside, as he could now once again feel his fingers. He carefully pulled his sliver cigarette case from his pocket lighting one cigarette for himself and another for Sofia. “It is the better outcome you could have hoped for, all things considered.” He mused aloud, he rather supposed that Sofia would be relieved by the outcome, but it was clear that her passion for working within the imperial intelligence core was now lost to her and in Manfred's mind it was a shame, as Sofia was a damn good spy and far more talented for the side-lines merely because of her gender.

He chuckled to himself about this as he once again looked at Sofia. “So what's next? You have a new life now, what do you have planned?” He asked, hoping to give gentle encouragement to Sofia. But this was something Sofia had not really considered, she stood for a moment silent pondering the question in her mind. What would she now do? She had spent so long working as someone else and reporting things that were almost unthinkable.

“Well firstly I will need to return to my grandfather's estate and if I'm unable to work within the estate itself, either on the farm or the house, I will more than likely have to work as a nurse, there is a hospital near my grandfathers estate so it shouldn't be too hard to work and travel there. It is not ideal but I guess it is all I can really do now.” Sofia said, almost a little disheartened by the thought that she may have to work as something that she did not wish to do. To her mind working as a nurse was rather morbidly boring and it was all very well saving the lives of those fighting to save the people of Germany, but the thought of doing pretty much the same thing like mending bones and apply bandages day in day out seemed rather dull to Sofia, but if she must she must, specially in such harsh times.

“So how was your flight?” Sofia asked, it was clear that she wished to change the subject to something more enthusiastic. Yet however much Sofia tried to hide her rather evident disappointment, Manfred could clearly see it within her eyes but in a way he was rather glad she would no longer be sent into enemy territory, he could not admit that she was the last person he wanted to know lost their life during this war.

He pulled two nearby stools out from under the table, so that the pair of them could sit by the warmth of the fire. Manfred knew that it maybe weeks before he could see Sofia again and she was probably the only friend from his younger days that he missed seeing regularly and although she would more than likely write him letters, it was not the same as having her sat beside him. He also knew that many of his friends from past years were either away fighting or already dead and in a strange way he could not consider the thought of Sofia being killed or missing in action.

“I'm quite certain that there is no need for you to hasten to your Grandfather's estate.” Manfred said, he wished to ignore her question about his earlier flight as the weather had been dull all day and it had led to less allied pilots in their less able machines, although he had at least managed to down one plane to which he would order yet another silver trophy. Manfred also felt that Sofia really did not need an answer about how his flight went, it was as though it was noise to make conversation. However he watched Sofia carefully as if to see how she would respond to his next few words, aware that even as a skilled spy she seemed to allow him to see precisely what she wanted him to see and he himself felt that he could read her like an open book as if she held no secrets from him at all. “Why not stay with me for a few days? I have my own accommodation near the aerodrome, its not grand but it is something with a touch of home to it and it is in all sense of the word, modest and no doubt somewhat poor to you grandfathers estate, but its not far from the aerodrome and with the weather now becoming almost too poor for flights, I will more than likely have more time on my hands. I would be honoured if you would be my guest for a time.” Manfred asked as he seemed almost bonny and sickening with excitement at the mere thought of his own courage to ask Sofia to be his guest.

Yet he did not give a damn what anyone else around the aerodrome thought, let alone the squadron he was in, should they discover that Sofia had spent time in his own dwelling, nor did he care about being associated with her, as Sofia had been found innocent and if others believed in the propaganda and scandal of the press, that he himself was unmoved by and felt that if lesser men were moved by such whispers they were probably uneducated judgmental fools.

Sofia considered Manfred's rather generous offer, he was indeed right that she did not actually need to rush in returning to her Grandfather's estate, yet she could not help but wonder why Manfred was so interested in spending time with her now after all this time of knowing each other. She looked at him, still considering his offer and hospitality. “Why?” The word almost rushed off her tongue and she could not help but question why his invitation. “My grandfather will be expecting me to return to his estate in the next few days, but I am sure I could stay a few days within your dwelling, but, well dare I say that I'm confused by your invitation, please don't consider this an offense as I'm most honoured, but I would of thought you would be glad to see me leave town? You were always glad to know when I was leaving after the hunting events when we were in our youth.” Sofia continued as she remembered once again the summers so long ago.

They would ride though the forest, staying in small hunters lodges and hours of waiting silently for a creature of the forest to wander unsuspectingly though their path as the gathering of sportsmen would ring out a deafening shower of bullets. Many of the summer days were filled with both her and Manfred trying to better each others skills, always seemingly to get themselves into trouble with their peers as they would often think one or the other of them had yet again pulled a prank to cause the other trouble, to which was almost a vicious circle of revenge of Manfred and Sofia's youth. But as Sofia and Manfred become more mature with age many people within their social standing had said they both made a sweet pair, and yet again Sofia's mind drifted to the ball that was before her rather untimely departure to London, when she had been dancing with Manfred and it had been very clear even then, that many people believed Sofia and Manfred were a lot closure than what they themselves admitted.

Sofia took a deep breath before addressing her own curiosity. “I can not lie, but it would be rather nice to see first hand your collection of victory memorably.” Sofia of course knew Manfred would often have sliver trophies made with details of his victory's, as well as him decorating his room with parts of battle fallen planes that he himself had shoot down, it was to all intents and purposes becoming a treasure trove to his success and ego that seemed ever building in volume.

Manfred studied Sofia with his rather piercing gaze while he finished his cigarette before lighting a new one, he could not help wonder if Sofia shared in anyway the same feelings as he did for her, it was entirely possible that Sofia did not feel the same way at all, but Manfred was the first to admit that he found it difficult to believe that Sofia was not a little aware of his own desire for her. She was with all respects still a spy and reading people was a necessary part of that career in order to stay alive. But it could be that Manfred was not making it difficult for her to read him, like she made it easy for him to read her, unless he truly was a blind spot to her having given their shared history.

It was in that moment that he felt momentarily uneasy, more than he had felt in anyone else is company, his affections were not easily given but nor was he accustomed to being rebuked, specially from Sofia. It would sting him deeply if he were to force her to make it plainly known about her affections and it would sting even more if he were to discover that Sofia did not hold him in the same esteem as he held her. Still her question demand him to speak and while he would not say all that was upon his mind or within his heart, he would neither skirt too far afield from the matter itself. “I merely favour your company, why else would I wish to have you stay?” He finally replied still showing his own conduct of charm and strength.

Sofia merely looked upon him, she had notice that his body language had clearly shifted as though he was trying to hide something and it was unmistakable that his cheeks were turning to a rosy pink and clearly not from the warmth of the fire which they both sat beside, but as though he was blushing from the mere thought of her company. She suddenly realized that she was being rather blind as she took a moment to carefully consider how Manfred was being. “Forgive me for asking this Manfred, but am I correct in thinking that you have more than a small amount of affection for me?” Sofia asked, her voice more unsure of how he would take her question and she hoped that he did not take offense to what she had asked and that it did not effect his kindness, as she continued to observe him. It was no secret to Sofia that Manfred had an uncle in the local area and that it was his estate that many from the aerodrome relaxed at, rather than the local town. Yet Manfred's own current show of affection was one that gave Sofia a rather uneasy feeling, as she had strongly believed that her own emotions were a weakness to her so she had kept them tightly hidden as much as she could. It was at this point that Manfred fixed his gazed upon Sofia, he was finding it now rather hard to resist looking away from her and it seemed as if she had moved closure to him, of course he felt affection for Sofia, far more than just a little.

Manfred once again raised the cigarette to his lips, taking a long drag from it, while he tried to bring forth a disarming smile. He shrugged his shoulders and conceded the fact that he had no real option but to admit a few things in his own way to Sofia.

“Well you have found me out, you truly are Germany's greatest spy regardless of your current employment statues. I'm not surprised at the sharpness of your deductive skills at all.” Manfred replied still watching Sofia carefully, he suspected that she felt some affection for himself but he was not skilled in reading people his genius was in flying, cavalry and hunting. He was even less skilled in reading the emotions of women and it was no secret that he had often mistaken a women's affections less than what they were, but this did not damage his beloved appearance that seemed to be building in the peoples eyes. “Maybe my affections for you cloud my own judgment of you? I had wondered if your affections were more than what you yourself wished to admit, the fact you did not judge me while I was going though the trails like everyone else had been doing does speak high volumes.” Sofia replied, but Sofia had not noticed, like Manfred had, that the pair of them had edged closure together.

Manfred was no fool and was not blind to the fact they had moved closure together once again and this new found closeness to Sofia made his pulse quicken. He knew he felt less nervous when flying hundreds of feet above the ground, looking down at the small toy like houses and farms and even more less nervous then when he was outnumbered in a dog fight, compared to how he felt in this precise moment next to Sofia. It was clearly a deep annoyance to him that he was nervous and that she had this ability over him. “So what is your judgment of me?” Manfred asked trying to make light of the situation, yet not moving away from her.

Sofia could clearly see that he was nervous in this currant situation, but she was not about to move away either as she felt she now had some power over him, a power to which she had not been able to access when they were teenagers, as she smiled deviously towards him. “You are nervous around me and though we spent many summer days together as teenagers they were spent with you trying to pull pranks on me, it is hard to not notice that others admire you, yet you yourself fear me, as though I may taint your ego and strength but you have won many of the peoples hearts, you are a hero with your skill that is ever increasing.” Sofia said almost boosting his ego and confidence to try and make him feel more secure, while she edged a little closure towards him.

Manfred found himself now standing from his seat as he couldn't help feeling so vulnerable, he quickly busied himself placing logs on the fire to keep it burning brightly as he cast his cigarette aside. He felt like Sofia was cornering him and this was not a feeling he enjoyed, yet he almost desired it. Sofia had also stood up at this point, she was not about to withdraw her power over him, it was almost like a cruel game to her, to her mind he was rather enjoyable prey.

However much Manfred tried to avoid Sofia, he found himself once again near her. If anyone had observed them within the small building, they would of seen the pair circling round each other as though dancing to avoid each other, until Sofia had almost cornered Manfred before kissing him tenderly on the lips. Manfred could not help himself but relaxed instantly, his hands upon Sofia's hips as he could feel her lips pressed against his own, as it seemed to set fire to his blood in a way that he had never truly felt before.

He had indeed enjoyed other women's company but none of them had created such fire within him. Being a hero seemed at this moment nothing more than a far away and rather silly thing, as he gazed at Sofia's eyes of the richest deep blue that offered him a glimpse of a world far more enthralling than the one the Kaiser had promised the people with this accused war. A smile twisted across his lips, if a little sheepishly, but he did not need to speak aloud the words of his teenage boyhood day dreams that had often been of Sofia, as they fluttered once more into the back of his mind.

“Competing against you sharpened my skills in hunting, let alone my wits when it came to creating pranks on you.” Manfred replied, yet he could not stop himself once again kissing her, but this time more roughly as his hands eagerly grasped her hips and from his observations there could not exist a more divine shape than Sofia.

Sofia could feel the kiss deepen but she knew they were not in a suitable location to allow their affection to shine too brightly, as she quickly broke the kiss by pulling away from him, while her fingers gently placed over his lips in order to stop him. “Stop, we shouldn't not here, not at the aerodrome.” She said gazing at him. It was evident that voices were becoming louder and Manfred knew that the privacy they both shared would soon be filled by a crowd of pilots, as he watched Sofia pull away further from him before quickly tidying her appearance for the soon arrive comrades, while he himself gathered his wits.

It was not easy for Sofia to hide her rose tinted cheeks, as she looked at Manfred still heated from the moments kiss. “Seen as we should be celebrating my new found innocence, perhaps we should go for dinner this evening?” Sofia began as she looked at Manfred as he once again lit a fresh cigarette, while she began preparing hot mugs of chocolate for the other pilots Manfred began to nod his head at the thought of dinner that evening. “Dinner tonight does sound a joyous idea.” He replied while the other pilots walked in, taking the hot mugs of chocolate from the table were Sofia had prepared them, as the large crowd all talked loudly filling the building with loud discussions.

Sofia once again felt out of place as she carefully slipped the hotel room number into Manfred's jacket pocket before she sneaked away, leaving Manfred with his friends and fellow pilots as they talked. Yet Manfred could not lie to himself that the thought of spending an evening with Sofia in a more intimate location with affections like his currently and without being at risk of being noticed or disturbed by his fellow officers, was rather desired. But the feeling was so intense for Manfred that it made him dizzy and rather light headed, it was as though he may have stepped into a dream like state.
