World of Light

Short Story

I am excited to share this story with everyone. After checking out Vocal, and reading multiple stories on here, I found this site to be a flourishing place for creatives. I decided to join these creatives and hope to find it as inspirational as others have. I am thankful for sites like Vocal who give writers a place to gather and share.

The story I am putting out here today is a favorite of mine. It is something I slowly have added to, but always enjoyed the simplicity of. As an amateur writer, I find it helpful to simplify my writing. I have been writing since I a young age. Always hopeful that the hobby would turn to something more realized. With Vocal I plan on learning as a writer and making the most of my time on the site. Enjoy my story!

He had begun to miss it, his shadow. The boy used to play with it all of the time. However, since the flash his shadow has been nowhere to be found. The boy’s parents chided him on his search for it, and he seemed to be the only one to miss his. So the boy sat outside, with all of the light in tow, and his shadow missing.

As the boy grew older, he started to miss his shadow less and less. Other interests had taken his attention, and soon this boy would have to take on a job. Many options waited him. He could work in the great factory, where the flash was powered, bringing the great light to all those of society. Or, the mill perhaps, bringing food to everyone he loved and providing sustenance for his community. Could the boy even strike out on his own? Going about the land abiding by his own wishes, wants, and needs? The options were all there, with only time telling where he'd finally end up.

The boy, who had now grown into a man, knew the factory was waning. The great lights had fluttered more than once in the past year, and his ownership had pushed the factory too far. He'd be receiving calls any minute, or maybe a knock on the door. Even while sitting in his favorite chair at home, the man could tell the great lights struggled to envelope the room. He sighed and sat his hat down on the stand beside him.

In doing so, the man noticed something. A skinny figure, lying on the ground in front of him. The man looked to his feet and saw the figure extending from himself. The man quickly stood up and moved from the chair, only to see the figure follow his movements exactly. The man laughed a joyous laugh. He happily laughed at how foolish he'd been.

Finally, his shadow had come back. He smiled down at the shadow and raised his hands up with the shadow following his movement. The man was glad to see his old friend back. Though now he knew what a shadow meant for the world, finding his own once again made him feel truly happy, something he hadn't felt since he was just a young boy.

So, the man sat down in his chair and closed his eyes. The shadow waved to the man in the chair, pulled its own feet off of the man's and began to grow. The shadow expanded all throughout the house, enveloping the floor, then the walls, and then the ceiling. The weakened light couldn't push it back now, so it grew, slowly taking in all that it would ever touch.
