When It Happens

They were both so sure. He was sure that she could never like him, and she was equally as sure that he could never like her. They were close friends and had been for years, and that was as far as it went.

They were both always there for each other and had each other's phone numbers.

At the back of their minds, they wanted more, but were so scared that if they made a move, they would wreck the friendship that they had. They were also scared to share their feelings with anyone else, in case their confidence was betrayed, and they both knew damned well that their friends would tell them to go for it, but they did not want to risk losing what they already had.

When they went home alone at night, they dreamed of being happy together, sharing their lives, and being with each other all the time.

Being alone was hurting both of them, but they could not see a solution.

They needed commonality, and they had it in that they liked each other a lot, but they did not think that was enough and were scared that they would push the other away if they said anything.

And then something happened.

He was taken into hospital, with an infection that they couldn't identify. He was worried that this was it. He couldn't leave the bed; he was in an isolation ward and on a drip.

He had his phone, and though he was worried about doing it, he messaged her to say he had been taken in and they didn't know what was wrong. He was scared and decided he needed to open up to her if she came.

He got a reply to his text that she was coming in immediately. He didn't know whether he was more scared of opening up to her or not knowing what was wrong with him.

Ahe came in and immediately gave him a big hug and a kiss on the cheek, being careful with the drip. That was the closest they had ever been together physically, and they were both thinking they wanted more hugs from each other.

Then the doctor came in and asked her to step outside. The doctor told him that they may have to remove his spleen, but their first treatment was going to be a complete blood transfusion, which would happen tomorrow. They were very hopeful that it would be a success.

She came back in, and he told her what was going to happen and asked if she would come back after the transfusion.

He then started crying and told her he wanted to be with her, and had felt like that for months. She grabbed him, hugged him, kissed him, and said she had felt the same way but was scared she would frighten him off.

They were both filled with happiness and said that after the operation, once he was discharged, they would do something special together.

They talked for ages and eventually gave him a goodnight kiss and left to catch her bus, with the promise that she would return tomorrow.

The transfusion was a success, and the doctor told him he had a rare infection, but it was clear now. In fact, he could be discharged, but needed to attend a post-op.

She came back, and they walked out of the hospital together into a beautiful new life.
