I'd like to share some stories about what happened to me in Japan.

[Tunnel

This story was told to me by a friend of mine from college, and it happened to his brother.

Around 2015 or so, his brother had just graduated from high school and had gotten his license and a new Suzuki. Since he was a motorcycle enthusiast himself, he went night riding almost every night that summer on a mountain bypass not far from their town.

As for why he chose the mountain highway at night, it was mainly because he had to go to work during the day, plus there were not many pedestrians and vehicles on this road, and it was a little distance away from the town so as not to disturb the people.

And this thing happened in one of the day late at night.

That night he set off for the mountains as usual, listening to music on his headphones.

It was about 7:00 at night when he started riding from the highway, and he was still in a relaxed mood as he was listening to music and the sky was not completely dark. After a while, he saw a small lake at the bottom of the highway hill. After another moment, he saw the speed limit sign for the highway in front of him.

It wasn't long after that that he saw the familiar tunnel through the mountain, and after a little more driving through that tunnel he could see a road to the right, through which he could go to the next town.

He drove into the tunnel listening to the music and by this time he looked at his watch, it was 7:25.

The tunnel was lit up as usual, nothing out of the ordinary, usually it took him 3-5 minutes at most to go through this tunnel. This time it was the same, he left the tunnel quickly. And usually, after he left the tunnel and rode down the road for a little while longer he would see the downhill road to the right and follow that way.

But this time was different.

He looked into the tunnel, which was lit like a normal tunnel, but after staring at it for a long time, he felt a hint of weirdness, and there was no way he could take his eyes off the tunnel entrance.

At the moment, he felt like the dim lights in the tunnel were like candle flames, and he was like a flying insect fighting the fire, with a nameless force that seemed to be pulling him into the fire and devouring him.

After stopping at the tunnel entrance for a few minutes, he accelerated into the tunnel. I don't know why I was feeling so irritated at this point, but all I could think about was riding faster and getting out of this tunnel.

He accelerated out of the tunnel and after a while, the same lake appeared at the bottom of the hill.

After a while, the same lake appeared below the hillside, followed by the same road sign, and then he arrived at the same tunnel entrance.

In China, this is often referred to as "ghosts hitting the wall", which means that ghosts and spirits keep creating illusions in front of someone to trick pedestrians into getting lost, mostly at night in the forest.

There is a scientific explanation that the poor visibility at night makes it difficult for human vision to provide a sense of direction for the body, and human feet stride in different lengths, so they often involuntarily go around in circles, which sounds plausible.

But I don't think it happens on a motorcycle ride on a one-way highway.

Back to this side of the road, for some reason he had a constant restlessness in him, like it was forcing him to fight this tunnel to the bitter end, and he didn't hesitate to accelerate into it.

The lake, the sign, the tunnel

Then the lake, the sign, the tunnel.

Then again, lake, road sign, tunnel.

I don't know how many times it cycled, or how long it took. When he reached the tunnel once more, he saw something different, which again made him stop at the tunnel entrance.

Inside the tunnel, it was pitch black and there was no light.

At this point his restlessness calmed down, he didn't know when he couldn't hear the music in his headphones anymore, so he took them off and quietly looked at the tunnel entrance.

There was no movement in the mountains, not even the chirping of birds and insects could be heard, and from time to time a faint cold wind blew out of the tunnel very unnaturally, so cold that it even made him shiver in August.

He looked at his watch, 9:31, he had already ridden for more than an hour on this endless road.

It was at this time that he felt scared and took out his cell phone to ask for help, only to find that it had long since died, so it was no wonder that the music in his headphones had stopped.

At this time, he suddenly heard the sound of a car coming from the tunnel, followed by what seemed to be the light of headlights in the distance of the tunnel that he vaguely saw.

Before he could react, he heard a sharp brake and the headlights disappeared into the darkness.

Now he was completely dumbfounded, staring into the dark tunnel, his thoughts confused. Had he just witnessed an accident? But why did the car suddenly brake sharply? He didn't hear any crash? And why didn't he hear the owner of the car move? Shouldn't he have called for help if something had really happened?

In the midst of his confusion, he only heard a male voice coming out of the tunnel, but instead of screaming or calling for help, it was a clear and emotionless voice:

"Come in."

This instantly gave him a frightening spirit, he immediately ignited the motorcycle and turned around, accelerated back to the original way, sprinting in the direction from which he came.

At this point can be said to be the fastest since he took the driver's license to ride, also do not care what traffic regulations and safety, than those behind the tunnel to be more scary, he only felt that if he stopped will be finished, so can not stop, absolutely can not stop.

Fortunately, he didn't pass through a single tunnel on the way, and soon descended the mountain, seeing the familiar streets as if what had just happened hadn't happened at all.

Although he never encountered such a thing again after that, from that day on, he developed a strange fear of tunnels and caves. Whether it was day or night, he would never voluntarily enter a tunnel on any road again, and even when he was sitting in his friend's car, he would sweat profusely and turn pale when he entered a tunnel.
