Unicorns and Rainbows

Because Dana and JBaz made me do it.

By Mother CombsPublished 4 months ago 3 min read

On one of Mother Combs’s many trips across the globe, she came across an emerald-green valley in the middle of an icy glacier, hidden from human eyes. In the middle of this valley was a hot spring that kept the valley warmer than it was on the glacier. In this valley, rainbows were everywhere, reflections of the sun off the ice. It was a breathtaking sight to behold, and as Mother Combs stood in awe of the beauty surrounding her, she was surprised by a herd of Unicorns trotting past her. She tried to chase them, but they were too fleet of hoof for her, and she soon lost them.

As the hoofbeats faded into the distance, Mother Combs debated on what to do. She could continue her trip around the globe or stay in this valley longer. Mother Combs soon decided to wait longer and set up a campsite in the hopes of witnessing the miracle of the Unicorns once again. She walked back to her specialty-made gyrocopter and started unpacking her gear.

Once she set up the tent, she ate a meal. Then, Mother Combs dug out her painting supplies and began painting the scenery around her. It was just too beautiful not to paint, and she hoped she could do it justice.

She saw the Unicorns four more times before the night came. As the sun set, the rainbows blinked out one by one. It took longer than she expected because of the sun’s reflection off the icy walls of the glacier. She waited as long as possible before lighting her battery-operated lantern for the night. She put her paintings up for the night. Then Mother Combs decided to sit up and look at the stars for a while before she turned in for the night.

The stars were so much brighter than anywhere Mother Combs had ever been. She was seeing more constellations than she had seen in a long time. The North Star shone brightly, and with the other stars shining, it was almost as light as a moonlight night at her home in Missouri.

Then the moon rose. Mother Combs had never seen the sight that she then witnessed. The moonlight was as bright as a cloudy day. Nighttime rainbows appeared all over at once, and below, deeper in the valley, were hundreds of Unicorns of every shape and size, racing across the valley floor.

Mother Combs stood and stared in complete amazement at the sight below her. The beauty of the moon’s rays and the majesty of the Unicorns combined created such a fantasy image that Mother Combs knew she would never tell a soul about this place for fear that humans would destroy Valley of Unicorns.

Over the next two days, Mother Combs stayed and painted scenes she had seen, hoping to one day write a story about Unicorns for everyone to read. Sadly, Mother Combs knew she could never tell a living soul about anything she had seen for a long while. No one would ever believe she was speaking the truth, but she was making up tales.

So, after a couple of days, Mother Combs loaded up her specialty-made gyrocopter with all her folded tent, battery-operated lantern, and dinner utensils. She also put her paints, canvases, and trash in the back of the gyrocopter. Mother Combs never left any garbage behind wherever she went.

Mother Combs stood and took one last look at the valley below before she left. She stood for several minutes, staring at the myriad rainbows and watching the Unicorns racing through the rays of prism from the ice. She still thought it was the most beautiful event she had ever witnessed.

Finally, Mother Combs climbed into her gyrocopter and took off, reminding herself she’d have to visit this Valley of Unicorns now and then.

The nighttime rainbows sound very mythical and out-of-this-world, a very spiritual experience like seeing the Northern Lights. If only such a place did exist! You did well in describing this adventure and the beauty that it contained.

  • Oh wow, nighttime rainbows! I wonder how they would look like. Your story was absolutely wonderful!
