Under the Grass
It's a magical land beneath our feet!
Jamie, a little boy who loves to play with bugs.
He runs to the yard towards his favorite spot at the edge of the grass.
He patiently waits for his friend the ant.
Out from the jungle the ant appears, touching Jamie and shrinking him.
They both run and play hide and seek between the tall grass.
Racing up a dandelion, they fly on its seed.
Floating they see the butterflies dancing,
their magic wings sprinkling dust on the flowers.
They land on a wildflower, sunbathing and observing the clouds.
At evening Jamie goes back home, until next time ant.

I can't imagine dying like this, in a place like this; on a cold, dirty pavement with rush hour traffic screaming by and a crowd looking on while paramedics struggle to find space to move. Who could? Deep down we all think there should be a reason, a moment of clarity... or a family presence, at least. For this man, this boy, the rail thin woman lighting a cigarette in a faux fur jacket will have to do - she's been here since the start, her eyes tracking the movement of my shoulders as we fight to keep him on the right side of the line.
