The Wage Slave’s Manifesto (STORY): CH 2
Breaking the Chains

The Algorithmic Underground**
— — Chapter 1 << >>> Chapter 3
### **The Descent**
Ethan wakes to the sound of rain drumming on corroded metal. He’s curled beneath a flickering hologram ad for **HealthCorp’s “Eternal Youth Serum”**, his mother’s photo still clenched in his fist. The DebtTracker on his wrist buzzes relentlessly:

>*“CCS WARNING: 280. Tier-4 status imminent. Penalty: Mandatory labor-camp enrollment in 72 hours.”*
The Resistance flyer lies soggy at his feet. He traces the address scrawled on it — **13 Mercy Lane** — a derelict zone even drones avoid.
— -
### **The Black Market Stock Exchange**

**13 Mercy Lane** is a boarded-up laundromat. Inside, the air reeks of ozone and desperation. Flickering holoscreens display chaotic streams of data: commodity prices, corporate vulnerabilities, and **CCS hacks**. A masked figure guards a rusted door labeled **“BMSE: Knowledge is Currency.”**
Ethan is frisked, stripped of his DebtTracker, and shoved into a cavernous basement. Dozens of hollow-eyed men and women huddle around terminals, their fingers flying over stolen corporate algorithms. At the center of the room, a woman with a shaved head and neural implants barks orders:
**“Zara Kwan. Feed the AI the PharmaCorp leak. Short their biostocks by 0900 — they’ll crash when the news hits.”**
Zara notices Ethan. Her eyes narrow. *“Fresh meat. What’s your play, Cole?”*
— -
### **The Offer**

Zara drags Ethan into a makeshift office littered with shattered server parts. She’s **ex-CyberSec** for Praetorian Industries, fired for refusing to spy on coworkers. Now, she runs the BMSE — a network that hijacks corporate AIs to predict market shifts.
*“You’re not here to *gamble*,”* she snaps. *“You’re here to **war-game**. Every trade is a strike against the corps. Win enough, and you buy your way out. Lose, and they’ll scrap you for parts.”*
She tosses him a cracked tablet. *“Your Praetorian access codes still work. Get me their weapons shipment logs. In return, I’ll teach you to play the system.”*
— -
### **The First Move**
Ethan hesitates. Betraying Praetorian means treason — a **CCS reset to zero**. But Zara’s right: the BMSE isn’t luck. It’s **asymmetric warfare**, exploiting corporate greed against itself.

He logs into Praetorian’s database using his old credentials. The shipment logs reveal a **clandestine deal**: illegal arms sold to a warlord in the EuroZone. Zara grins. *“Leak this to the media, and Praetorian’s stock nosedives. We short-sell their shares before the crash.”*
Ethan’s hands shake. *“And if we’re wrong?”*
*“We’re not wrong. Corps are predictable — they’ll cover up the leak, which makes the panic worse. It’s math, not magic.”*
— -
### **The Execution**
At 4:32 a.m., Zara’s team deploys the leak across underground networks. By dawn, **#PraetorianBloodMoney** trends globally. The stock plummets 62%.
Ethan watches his stolen CCS account swell: **$287,000**. Enough to erase his mother’s medical debt and buy a Tier-2 apartment.

Zara slaps him with a cold realism. *“One win doesn’t free you. The corps will adjust. You adapt faster.”*
— -
### **The Cost**
As Ethan leaves, a BMSE trader is dragged into an alley by **Corporate Security Enforcers**. His screams echo. Zara doesn’t flinch. *“Hedge your bets, Cole. Trust no one — especially me.”*

Ethan’s DebtTracker reactivates with a taunt:
>*“CCS INCREASE: 400. Tier-3 restored. Welcome back to the machine.”*
— -
### **PodStack’s eviction notice…**

Ethan stares at his PodStack’s eviction notice. For the first time, he doesn’t see despair — he sees **leverage**.
He tears up the notice and opens a BMSE terminal. On the screen: a live feed of **Praetorian CEO Alden Voss** (father of his BurgerNex boss) giving a press conference, sweaty and defensive.
Ethan types a command:
**“SHORT PRET: ALLOCATE 100%.”**
