The Wage Slave’s Manifesto 1

A Story of Rebellion and Redemption-CH 1

Chapter 1: The Grind:

### **Setting the Stage**

The story opens in **New Corinth**, a sprawling metropolis in the **United Corporate States of America (UCSA)**. The year is **2047**, and the nation has devolved into a hyper-capitalist dystopia. Corporations have replaced governments, labor laws are nonexistent, and citizens are ranked by their **Corporate Credit Score (CCS)** — a number that determines their access to housing, healthcare, and even basic dignity.

The skyline is dominated by neon-lit skyscrapers bearing logos like **HealthCorp**, **BurgerNex**, and **Praetorian Industries**, while the streets below are clogged with exhausted workers in gray uniforms, their faces lit by the glow of debt-collection drones patrolling the air.

### **Meet Ethan Cole**

*Ethan Cole**, 28, is a **Tier-3 Laborer** with a CCS of **412** (out of 1,000). He lives in a **PodStack** — a vertical slum of coffin-sized apartments — in District 9, the poorest quadrant of New Corinth. His life is a relentless cycle of two jobs:

1. **Day Shift**: Assembly line worker at **Praetorian Industries**, a weapons manufacturer. His task? Screwing triggers into AI-powered rifles for 12 hours straight.

2. **Night Shift**: Janitor at **BurgerNex**, a fast-food megacorp, where he scrubs grease off floors while avoiding the wrath of his manager, **Mr. Voss**, a former debt collector with a penchant for humiliation.

Ethan’s only motivation? His **mother, Lila**, who’s dying of cancer in a **HealthCorp hospice**. Her treatment costs **$8,000 a day**, and Ethan’s wages barely cover the interest on her medical debt.

### **The Inciting Incident**

The chapter begins with Ethan’s **4:45 a.m. alarm**. He hasn’t slept in 38 hours. His PodStack reeks of synthetic protein bars, and the walls hum with the sound of his neighbor’s cough. He checks his **DebtTracker app**:

- **Mother’s Medical Debt**: $1,243,556.22

- **Rent Due**: $1,200 (or eviction in 72 hours)

- **CCS Penalty**: -10 points for “insufficient productivity” at Praetorian.

Ethan injects himself with **StayAlert™**, a stimulant bought off the black market, and races to catch the **WorkerShuttle** to Praetorian. On the ride, he replays a voicemail from HealthCorp:

>*“Mr. Cole, your mother’s palliative care license expires in 48 hours. Remit $15,000 to renew, or she’ll be transferred to a Tier-1 Termination Facility.”*

— -

### **A Day in Hell**

*Scene 1: The Assembly Line**

At Praetorian, Ethan’s workstation is a metal stool bolted to the floor. His supervisor, **A.I. Unit #XR9**, barks orders via a wall-mounted screen:

>*“Laborer Cole, your trigger-screw rate is 2.3 seconds below quota. Penalty: $50 deducted from wages.”*

Ethan’s hands bleed from repetitive motion, but he can’t afford gloves. He steals glances at a crumpled photo of his mother taped to his locker — a younger Lila, laughing in a sunflower field, before the tumors and the debt.

**Scene 2: The Debt Collector**

During his 15-minute lunch break (a “nutrition pellet” and recycled water), Ethan gets a call from **Grimm & Reaper Collections**:

>*“You’re behind on your mother’s interest payments, Mr. Cole. We’ll be seizing your PodStack tomorrow. Unless… you’d like to discuss our *organ-collateral* program?”*

**Scene 3: The Night Shift**

At BurgerNex, Mr. Voss forces Ethan to clean a clogged grease trap without gloves. “*You stink like failure, Cole,*” he sneers. “*No wonder your CCS is trash.*”

Ethan finds a discarded **BurgerNex gift card** with a $5 balance — enough to buy Lila a “luxury” apple from the hospice vending machine. It’s the closest thing to hope he’s felt in months.

— -

*The Breaking Point**

At 2:00 a.m., Ethan arrives at the **HealthCorp hospice**, a sterile cube lit by flickering LED strips. Lila is skeletal, her body tethered to a humming **BioLeach Machine** that extracts her remaining healthy cells to sell to wealthy clients.

He places the apple on her bedside. She’s too weak to eat it.

>*“Ethan… promise me you’ll get out,”* she whispers. *“This country… it’s a machine that eats its own.”*

Her heart monitor flatlines.

A HealthCorp drone appears instantly:

>*“Death recorded. Account balance: $1,243,556.22. Remit payment within 24 hours, or the corpse will be processed for biofuel.”*

— -

### **Chapter 1 Ends With…**

Ethan stumbles into the rain-soaked streets, clutching his mother’s photo. His DebtTracker pings:

>*“ALERT: Your employment at Praetorian Industries has been terminated due to ‘excessive emotional liability.’ CCS reduced to 300. Eviction notice: 12 hours remaining.”*

He collapses under a flickering billboard advertising **“Freedom Loans! (APR 45%)”** and screams into the void.

But in the gutter, he spots a torn flyer:

***“THE RESISTANCE: Break your chains. Ask about the Black Market Stock Exchange.”***

A faint smirk cuts through his tears.
