The Thief
A micro fiction story
Winded, he ran on. He leaped over tree roots.
He could hear his pursuers close behind him. Dry branches snapped, feet pounded the earth. Dogs howled.
They were calling to each other.
"Over here!"
"This way!"
“He went through here!"
He thought he could smell their sweat on the wind.
Trying to steal a chicken in broad daylight had been stupid, but he was so hungry.
Suddenly, the ground opened up and swallowed him. He fell a long way and landed hard on dry leaves. But he was safe now.
The fox collapsed, exhausted, inside his den.

Liz this was so suspenseful for such a short story! I have a particular soft spot for foxes 🦊 and I think this is my favourite story by that I've read thus far! Nicely done by hiding the characters identity right until the end, made for a great twist! Overall a very nice read! 😊
I really love this one, Liz. You capture all the elements: in medias res, lots of characters, vivid environment, clear beginning, middle, end; and a lovely twist to finish. Bravo 👏👏👏👏
