THE SUBWAY CRUSH.

A tale of missed opportunities.

Abigail always took the subway at the same time every day. It was part of her daily routine to get to work on time. However, there was another reason why she took that particular train at that particular time. It was because of him, the man who always sat in the same spot, on the other side of the carriage. She had never spoken to him, but she had been secretly admiring him for seven months.

He was tall, with deep brown hair and piercing blue eyes. Abigail would catch herself staring at him, admiring the way he held himself with such confidence, and the way his jawline jutted out sharply. She didn't know his name, but she had created many fantasy scenarios of how they would meet, fall in love, and live happily ever after.

Abigail worked at the local library, and most of her days were spent shelving books or helping customers find what they needed. Her job was mundane, and the only thing that kept her going was the thought of seeing him on the subway. It was the one highlight of her day.

Every morning, she would walk to the station with butterflies in her stomach, hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of him walking towards the platform. Once she arrived, she would board the train, and take a seat in her usual spot, diagonally opposite him. She kept her eyes glued on him throughout the journey, admiring his facial features, his smile, and the way he would occasionally glance in her general direction.

But, there was always a distance between them. They never spoke or even looked at each other directly. It was like they were in their own world, but Abigail always hoped that one day, something would happen, and they would connect.

One particular morning, Abigail was feeling braver than usual. She had rehearsed in her head what she would say if she ever got the chance to talk to him, and today she was determined to do it. As she entered the subway car, she saw him sitting in his usual spot, and her heart skipped a beat. She felt a rush of adrenaline as she walked towards him, but her nerves got the best of her, and she accidentally tripped.

She stumbled and lost her balance, causing her to almost fall on him. He quickly reached out to grab her, and they locked eyes for what seemed like an eternity. In that moment, Abigail couldn't believe it was happening - they were finally having a moment.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice laced with concern.

Abigail was lost for words. She gazed into his eyes, mesmerized by his beauty. She didn't know how to reply, so she simply nodded. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to trip," she finally stammered.

"It's alright. Are you sure you're okay?" he asked again, looking genuinely concerned.

Abigail couldn't help but smile. She was finally getting her chance to talk to him. "Yes, I'm fine. Thank you for catching me," she said, trying to sound confident.

He smiled back, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "No problem. I'm glad you're okay," he replied.

There was a brief moment of silence, and Abigail knew that this was her chance to introduce herself. But as much as she tried, she couldn't seem to utter a word. The nerves got the best of her, and before she knew it, the subway had come to a stop. Jeremy looked at her and gave her a small smile. "Take care, Abigail," he said, before alighting from the train.

Abigail was left sitting there, feeling foolish. She had missed her chance, and now she would have to wait until tomorrow to try again.
