The Story of Promiseum - Dream Walker
Chapter Ten - The Bad Doctor
When Danny came to, he was strapped to a table. Danny lifted his head and looked around, realizing that he wasn't in the same room. He was now in the central lab. It didn't seem like much of a lab, though. For all the security and secrecy, you would think there would be more equipment. Or at least lab techs running around. As far as Danny could tell, there was only one person in this lab (besides himself).
"Oh, you're awake." He said, finally noticing Danny.
"It would appear so," Danny said sarcastically. "Who are you, and why am I here?"
"I am Dr. Roberts," he answered. "And I would say, trespassing. But it seems strange that you are here, and suddenly five people have gone missing."
"Are you sure they're missing?" Danny asked. "Maybe they're just avoiding you. What's strange is that I was just unconscious, but I wasn't dreaming."
"That's because this is a dream chamber," he said proudly. "You are in an artificial dream field powerful enough to block you from the real thing. That is why you can't leave."
"Are you sure I can't leave?" Danny asked. "Maybe I like it here."
"Okay, wise guy, let's see you leave then," he said.
"No," Danny said. "I think I like it here. Besides, you didn't ask nicely."
"Please," he said. "Is that nice enough?"
"No, but it's a start," Danny said. "Maybe I'll go easy on you."
"Maybe you'll go easy on me?" He said. "It looks like you're the one trapped. And as far as going easy, you'll get no such treatment from me. I think I will enjoy taking you apart and seeing what makes you tick."
As he spoke, Dr. Roberts pulled a large remote device from the pocket of his lab coat. It seemed to be a simple device. There was a screen on top, with a few buttons under it. The feature that stood out the most was the dial near the bottom. Dr. Roberts turned the dial slightly. Danny felt as if a fire had jumped through his body. But this fire didn't burn his flesh. It felt like it was burning through his soul. Danny screamed as the pain became too much.
"Is that all you got?" Dr. Roberts said, "my last subject was a better screamer."
He turned the dial even farther, but this time Danny didn't scream. So, he turned the dial all the way. Now the pain was indescribable, burning, tearing, crushing, like his very being was exploding a million times a second. But Danny refused to scream! He didn't know how long it lasted, but he was close to his breaking point.
Then something clicked. It was like a switch turning on. It gave Danny something to concentrate on as the pain pushed him closer to the edge. Then, it felt like everything expanded, his senses, his awareness, his entire being. He was now aware of Dr. Roberts laughing at his pain. He was also aware of Emily. She was worried about and missed him but had absolute faith he would return. He was aware of his mom praying, his medial spirit trying to expand their connection, and Walter trying to find him. But there was something else, something familiar. Then Danny realized it was medial energy, everywhere! Then, the pain just melted away. Danny sat up; the straps fell away as he raised his hand. Sparks of static jumped from his fingers.
"I knew that felt familiar," Danny said.
"How did you do that?" Dr. Roberts asked. "It's impossible!"
"Not really," Danny said. "Medial energy is medial energy, even if it's extracted artificially. I may not be able to get out, but neither can you. So, we wait."
"Wait for what?" he asked.
As if right on cue, there was a cracking sound. A few seconds later, a bolt of lightning sprang from the middle of the room. Then, more cracks of lightning as a rift opened. Out of the rift stepped a man. He was about five feet, nine inches, and was dressed head to toe in what looked like an old tracksuit, but you could see a hint of the wires sewn in. He was also wearing what looked like a ski mask, made the same way, with those blacked-out swim goggles attached. Thick gloves and a backpack unit completed the suit.
"Walter?" Danny asked.
"Yes, it's me, "Walter said. "This is my dream suit."
"Can you shut this off?" Danny asked.
"No," Walter answered, but do you need an energy boost?"
Walter held his hand out in front of him with his gloved palm facing Danny. Danny raised his hand to Walter's hand, and he immediately received a rush of power. It was like nothing Danny had ever experienced. He could feel at least three medial spirits. Danny turned to face his host.
"You know, Dr. Roberts," he said, "I think I'm bored with this place."
Danny snapped his fingers, and everything shut down. He waved his hand, and everyone that was in the building was suddenly outside. Then the people started to notice. The building was No longer where it should be, and the air was filled with surprised murmurs. "What happened? Where are we? Is this a dream?" Then Danny spoke.
"No," Danny began, "this is not a dream. This is your new home. For crimes against dream folk, you have been sentenced to spend all of eternity in this labyrinth. Your only purpose in this existence is to protect the gate in the middle and the secrets hidden within."
Danny snapped his fingers, and everyone changed into different creatures and was spread throughout the labyrinth. Then Danny turned to Dr. Roberts.
"For saying please," Danny said, "you shall have the honors of being the final key Bearer."
Before Danny was even finished speaking, Dr. Roberts started to transform. When the transformation was complete, Danny looked him over. He was now three feet tall. He had no hair on his head or bare chest, and His pants looked to be made from goat hide. His eyes were slightly large for his head. And his nose was now long and pointed. He was also barefoot, and his feet were twice as big as they should be. At the last minute, Danny decided to add small horns sprouting from either side of his crown.
"From now on, you shall be known as Hibbit," Danny said.
"Thank you, my lord," Hibbit said as he hobbled away.
Now Danny and Walter walked through the gate. They walked down the path to the giant tree. Lancel was there. He was sitting on the bench talking to Snip and Snap. When he saw Danny and Walter approaching, he stood up. He was so happy, he hugged Danny and Walter.
"Thank you for getting me out of there," Lance said, "But what happened? I thought you were right behind me."
"I got detained," Danny said. "I must have blacked out because the next thing I knew, I was waking up strapped to a table."
"How did you escape? "Lance asked.
"I dug out my dream suit and went to save him," Walter said. "But when I got there, he seemed fine."
"I'm glad you showed up," Danny said. "It saved a lot of time, and I think things turned out better this way."
"So, what would you have done if he didn't show up?" Lance asked.
"Honestly, I don't know," Danny admitted. "But my plan was to wait."
"Wait for what?" Walter asked.
"I was surrounded by a dream field," Danny said. "Artificial or not, it's still medial energy. In that environment, I could sustain myself forever. I wouldn't have to eat, sleep, or do anything else to sustain myself. Dr. Roberts, on the other hand, still required all of that. Once he realized he was trapped, and the only way he could get out was to release me, it was just a matter of time. Hunger can be a potent motivator. "
"Just be careful," Lance said. “There's no telling what they'll do next.”
"Don't worry," Danny said," They won't bother us ever again. But I'll let Walter explain it to you. I will be back as soon as I can."
Danny didn't realize how long he must have been unconscious. He didn't really give it much thought. But, when he got home to tell everyone the good news, it was just past noon. Emily and Robert didn't want to just sit around waiting, so they opened the store like usual that morning. They closed a little early today, so they all just finished lunch when Danny got back. When he walked into the dining room, Emily ran to him and threw her arms around him.
"We were so worried about you," Emily said, "what happened? Did you find your father? Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm okay," Danny said, "and Lance is okay. He's in the garden waiting for us."
"Please take me to him," Elizabeth said. "It's been so long I can't go another minute without seeing him."
"Okay," Danny said, "I'll take all of you. Take my hand."
He held out both of his hands. Emily took one hand; his mom took the other. He opened a dream door and took them through, then went back for Robert. He took them into the medial realm and then into the labyrinth. They were now standing at the grand gate.
"This gate leads to the garden, and it's the only way in and out. Even for me," Danny said. "I sealed the rest personally. It's now a safe haven for all dream folk."
Danny turned away from the door and snapped his fingers. Hibbit stepped out from behind a nearby tree.
"This is Hibbit," Danny said. "He's the final key Bearer and guardian of the gate. Hibbit, this is Elizabeth. She is my mother, and she may come and go as she pleases. While she is here, you will serve and protect her with your entire being, down to your last breath. That includes her attached spirit. Swear it!"
By this point, he was kneeling in front of her.
"I swear it," Hibbit said, "As you command, to my last breath!”
As he spoke, a tattoo of a sword started to form, from the base of his skull to the small of his back. The hilt appeared to be ivory. At the end of the hilt was a fist attached to the guard by a wrist. The guard consisted of two dagger blades across his shoulders. The sword had a blue steel blade. The high carbon steel blade would have received its color from the tempering process. It was a double-edged blade. One side was straight and razor-sharp. The other slightly curved out and was serrated almost to the tip. His oath of service was scribed into the blade. When the tattoo was complete, he stood and said, "thank you, my lord." Then disappeared behind his tree.
"A bit dramatic, don't you think?" Emily said.
"Yes," Danny said, "but for him, I would have it no other way."
Then they walked through the gate. Elizabeth gasped as she noticed the beauty of the garden. It was like a perfect dream for her. They walked down the path towards the giant tree. When they were close enough to see it, Elizabeth took off running. Lancel was unprepared when she jumped into his arms, and he had to grab the tree with one hand to keep them from falling on the ground. They were locked in their embrace for a very long time, kissing each other over and over again. Then it really hit Danny. This was their first time seeing each other, since before he was born. He couldn't imagine being separated from Emily that long. He looked at her. She had that look again, and it took his breath away. So, he took her in his arms and kissed her.
A few minutes later, Danny said, "it's time."
Danny took his mother's hand with his right hand, and his father's with his left. He felt their energy and let it flow through him. Then, Danny had them join their other hands. He reconnected their spirits, and then he balanced their energy. After that, he strengthened the connection with their medial spirit, and it was done.
Now it was time for Walter to speak, as he performed the ceremony to join them together as husband and wife. Essentials from both sides joined the celebration afterward. One of the Essentials from the other side caught Robert's eye. Her name is Aisling(ash-ling), and she prefers to be in human form. As everyone got to know each other or became reacquainted, Danny prepared a feast. He wanted to go all out for such a special occasion.
Later, when the celebration was finally over, Danny had a chance to talk to his parents.
"What do you think of the garden?" Danny asked.
"I think it's great," Lance said.
"It's the most beautiful place I've ever seen," Elizabeth said. "I never want to leave."
"I'm glad to hear that," Danny said, "because it's yours. You can't go back to the physical realms, and you can't just drift through the veil of dreams, so this is your home now. Allow me to show you around."
They walked down the path towards the back of the garden. At the end of the path was a small cottage.
"Here's your new house," Danny said. "You'll find everything you need in there. Most of the trees here are fruit or nut trees. There's also a garden behind the cottage that will produce vegetables year-round. And, since this is a world of magic, you will find a magic cupboard in the kitchen. When you open it, anything you need will be in there."
"I don't know how to thank you, Danny," Lance said. "You've done so much for me."
"Just take care of my mother," Danny said, "make sure she's always happy. Don't worry, Mom, I'll always come to visit. So will Emily, Robert, and Walter. I will make a door that will connect directly to this world. That way, they can visit anytime, even if I'm not available."
"Is that even possible?" Lance asked. "I mean, is there even enough medial energy outside of the dream veil?”
"I don't need it anymore," Danny said. "I can control left and right energy now. Not as much as medial energy, but more than enough to bring a building here."
"I do not doubt you," Lance said, "but how do you know this?"
Well," Danny said, "when I was in there, something happened. I don't know what, but it changed something. I'm somehow closer to my medial spirit. Now we can even share memories."
