The Path To The Moon
A Tale Inspired By A Drawing By William T Morton

Introduction
I saw this image on Instagram and wondered where it was from. I could make out the name William T. Morton, and this link points to the book it comes from.
The music is Rachel Neuville's take on "The Path to the Moon" by Eric Thiman
The Path To The Moon
They told me that there was a path to the Moon, but no one knew where it was, so eventually I did not believe them, although in my dreams I hoped that it was real.
Why did I want to find the Path To The Moon? I don't know, but I always wanted an escape from everyday life, if only for a day or two.
The one day I was out walking on the moor at twilight and came to a chasm edge, and from that edge a white stone path stretched out, jaggedly curving, upward and upwards, seeming to end at the silver face of the moon.
I had found The Path To The Moon; it was real, and I could take it. I could stand among the stars if I took the first step.
I did not know where I was, and I thought I might not be able to find it again, so I had to take the first step.
The path was jagged and winding, but I was careful as I traversed the path.
I walked upward along the white moon path, wondering what would be revealed when I reached the Moon. I kept on the path, wondering if it would ever end, and finally it did as I stepped onto the dust of the Moon's surface.
I was surprised that I could breathe, and looked back at the path I had used, seeing it disintegrate like a sheet of ice. I could not get back that way; my first thought was to find another path home.
Wandering through the dust, I could feel my skin drying out and flaking off. I realised I was turning to dust myself.
Was this what happened to those who found The Path To The Moon? Was this the way they left the mortal plane?
I was feeling so tired, and these words came to my mind
"Ashes To Ashes
Dust To Dust"
David Bowie
I would soon be part of the dust on the Moon, soon to be joined by others who found The Path To The Moon.
