The Nighttime Visitor
Flash Fiction for an October Prompt
I can hear the growling and the sounds of something scratching at the doors and windows from the outside, but I don't dare go take a peek. Though I am curious, I don't want to draw the creature's attention. After several nights of this and several days of finding the claw marks on the house's siding and the large footprints in the yard accompanied by a strong sense of something watching me from the woods, I don't need to know what it looks like to know that I don't want to mess with it.
The house is sturdy, and I've reinforced and barricaded the entryways. I remind myself of this several times as I pull the covers up over my head and try to ignore the noises. It shouldn't be able to get it.
Still, I'll keep a knife under my pillow tonight. Just in case I'm wrong about that...

I really enjoyed this, the suspense was just right, and the ending was satisfying.
