Ethan longed for more time than he had left. Each passing second was agony, a relentless reminder of his impending end. He slumped his tall, lanky frame onto the sofa, replaying his grandfather’s words in his mind. He could still see the old man pulling a pocket watch from his coat.

“I got all the time in the world right here in the palm of my hand,” his grandfather had said.

Ethan had never understood what he meant, and even now, he grappled with those words. What he desired more than anything was for them to hold some truth. Shortly after that conversation, his grandfather had died alone in his bed, the pocket watch slipping from his grasp. Ethan remembered his mother picking it up, its ticking the only sound in the room.

A realization struck him. He couldn't recall a moment when his grandfather was without that watch.

With a surge of urgency, Ethan leapt from the sofa and rushed to the garage. He tore through every box of his grandfather’s belongings until he found the watch, hidden in a broken lockbox. He could hear the faint ticks and tocks as opened it. As soon as he did, the hands on the watch spun back to the top and began anew.

Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. In that moment, he understood. The watch was more than a keepsake—it was a conduit, a vessel of time itself. As he held it, he felt an unfamiliar sensation: hope.

Ethan knew then that he was holding eternity in his hands. Time was no longer his enemy but a gift of his finding.

I’m not sure where the inspiration for this story came from. The idea just came to me and I acted on it.
