Jagged gray stones ripped at Malden’s callused hands.

“Forward, comrade!” Gregor yelled from above.

Jacob grasped the next ledge.

Whistles filled his ears, and he pulled himself over the top as artillery tore through No Man's Land. He charged as his lungs strained against noxious fumes. They overwhelmed him, and Jacob’s legs dissolved into sludge.

“Up, soldier! Up!”

Instead, Jacob prayed for silence to herald eternity.

“Comrade, you’re alright.”

He lay upon a small plateau, near a cave facing toward the valley, and Gregor stooped nearby, wearing a fellow soldier's look.

“The war’s over. Breathe, then we’ll finish our quest.”
