“Finally, a calm night’s rest,” Gregor said as Malden stepped out of the telegraph station. His telegraph to Arthur had been short but confirmed all of his suspicions.
“I prefer the food to the sleep, personally,” Jacob said. “I arranged us transport. Won’t be a pleasant journey, but we’ve had worse.”
“Unfortunately, my friend, this is the end of my road.”
Jacob looked at him, taken aback.
“The motherland calls. Its soil has become too drenched in blood. I–”
Gregor crumpled. Around them, crowds parted like the Red Sea.
Jacob dove as brick rained down like the rains of Passchendaele.
