The Elite

Hunters of the Wood

By Mimi Published 11 months ago 4 min read

Have you ever heard of fairies, or Fae? The different types of fairies, like Tinkerbell, or maybe of the Fern Gully? Well, this is a bit different than those, rather more duty driven. The Elite are a band of carefully selected and trained fairies that would protect the forest floors with their lives. They trained in every turn of weather- from the harsh and brutal winters, to the scorching and blistering summers, The Elite were driven past their breaking points to survive the elements, as well as predators. Although they were small, they were not weak by any means. They lifted around 10,000 times their body weight, and could even trip up humans and their industrial machines.

These Elite were a band of around 700 forest wide. Among the other types of fairies, that was a very small few, and it never gained any extra members, nor did it lose any. We don't know exactly why the number 700 was chosen for this task force, but it has never failed it's everchanging environment since it was established. The origins were traced back to the Stone Age, where all primal and magic energies were of parallel forces. The Ancient Fae were mostly fending for their survival above and below the surface where the Humans resided. They were almost wiped from existence had they not went underground for a few generations, building their nocturnal instincts to a sharpened peek. When they rose from the ground, they found the world to be lush and a bit empty. They trained in every turn of weather- but no amount of training would ever prepare them for the minds of obsessively curious humans.

The humans had problems and even poorer choices to treat themselves that the Fae did not agree with, and so as the dividing factor, went to hide in plain sight from these savage and ruthless creatures. They went into hiding during each of the wars the humans betrothed, keeping their maintained distance from the beasts. Then, one day, a fairy was spotted by a curious and young human. Then the human spread the word, causing the Fae the ultimate war ever raged in their history: the fight for survival against an enemy that misunderstood them, as they did their own kind. The populace of the Fae weakened immensely due to their experimentation, curiosity, wonder and fetishization. It was within those days The Elite swore the protection of their species before they were to be completely erased. And so they went into hiding once again, almost as if they all just vanished into thin air.

The fairies became equipped with self defenses, weaponry was built by hand from the elements, and their trainings began immediately. They built their strength in the underground tunnels they built, while encouraging the rest of the populace to do the same. They assigned each role to every Fae they came across underground: miners for hard resources such as stone, gems and anything else for the sake of forging into weapons; the Farmers for the food and water supply to keep survival comfortable for all Fae, as well as maintain ecosystems; the Magicks, maintaining their strength in all spiritual and magical realms; the Recorders, to maintain and update any and all advancements of the Fae to teach or tweak throughout the years for adaptability; and the Elite, the protection team everyone and the safety of the Courts.

The Elite have evolved with their counterparts, as now the world is aware and more accepting of the Fae, and even give them the necessary space to keep away from the humans. Humans are very twisted creatures, as they cannot even be trusted amongst their own if they do not familiarize with others, in which some cases were proven to be a forced behavior of hatred in their genetic codes, or so it seemed. Humans were not to be trusted by Fae ever again, hence why they hide in plain sight, and will possibly never break that faction, unless the humans make a drastic and beneficial change. Not only for themselves as a whole, but for the ecosystems they abuse as well, hence why The Elite working alongside the other Fae to fix what they have broken throughout each of their generations.

Some people say Fae hate humans. Which is true for some, but not for all. The Elite are among the very few Fae that respect humans for their adaptability to the elements, such as making their own clothing and gadgets to better their ways of life for themselves as well as their offspring and elders. But The Elite steadily keep this in mind while the humans show them why they will possibly never see their presence ever again. Too many Fae died sacrificing themselves for the discoveries of man, being plucked from their families to being plucked apart for "science".

The Elite are 700 strong, ranging from the sizes of a teensy 3 inches tall, to sizes as tall as trees. They protect and provide for the ecosystems as well as provide shelter and survival tactics to ensure they exist in the far future. When things take horrid turns, they take everyone and shelter them underground, while they either handle the problem or die trying. They have many faces and many different abilities as well as shapes, but they all recognize the lack of conflict due to being avoidant of the similar threat: humans. The Elite always check in with their clan members to express new information and new plans to manually navigate around the eyes of human beings as a whole, so when one is spotted, the humans convince themselves that they do not exist.

No other knowledge is outright for humans to seek out, as they become more and more of a folklore story with each passing minute. They lurk where we humans cannot see, even in the broad daylight. They scurry, some knock over things on accident, and some are tricksters that scare humans on purpose. The humans blame other things so their need to conceal is always very easy. They survive every weather change no matter how severe, and every natural disaster, you name it. But the next time you feel a sharp pain or hear some shifting wherever you are, just let them believe we don't know they are there. This world is theirs as much as it is ours, because they were here first.
