The Age of Dragons is a story about a young lady who finds herself in the presence of two eligible bachelors. She must choose one and risk her life, or try to keep them both and risk her heart. This book is written from the perspective of Francesca De Rossi, the heroine in this fictional romance story. The story begins with Francesca and her family traveling back to their castle home after spending several months at their summer residence. The castle has been passed down for generations in Francesca’s family. It is an old but beautiful place that stands on a hill overlooking the town of Siena. The estate has caves underneath it that are rumored to be haunted by ghosts and dragons. As they travel through the forest on their way home, Francesca spies two men that catch her eye. They turn out to be Giovanni and Giacomo, two eligible bachelors she doesn’t know very well yet and hopes to get to know better before they reach home again.

The Marriage Proposal:
Francesca has been courted by Giovanni for several months now. He’s sweet and charming, but Francesca is not sure if she loves him. Giovanni is a good man, but he’s not the most exciting person in the world. Francesca is still thinking about the dragon she saw that morning when he asks her to marry him. She knows that if she does not give him an answer right away, he runs the risk of being jilted by some other lady. Francesca is already debating what to do when a messenger arrives with a letter from Giacomo. He has been in Montalcino on business and is coming to Siena to visit Francesca and her family. Since he’s coming to visit, Francesca decides to wait to give Giovanni an answer. She has already given Giovanni her thanks and told him she would think about it until the time Giacomo arrives.

The Ghost in the Darkness:
Francesca meets Giacomo at the castle gates and brings him inside. He immediately notices the change in her demeanor since he has last seen her. Francesca is not happy to see him; she’s very upset. She is angry about the letter he sent her, but she doesn’t want to show it to him or her family. When she finally brings herself to speak to him about it, Giacomo apologizes for asking for her hand in marriage without even seeing her first, but his family needs a new wife and Francesca fits the bill. Her beauty and social standing are everything his family is looking for in a wife. Francesca is furious. She’s not going to stand for being treated like a commodity. She is a lady and deserves to be courted and wooed like any other lady. She also tells him off for telling everyone she is a witch because of her red hair.

A Dragon in the Light:
Francesca goes outside to cool down and see if her father is back yet. She is still angry about what happened with Giacomo and his family. As she stands in the light of the full moon, Giovanni appears from the shadows. He starts off by thanking her for giving him the chance to court her and then goes on to tell her that he loves her and would like to marry her. Francesca is shocked. She never expected Giovanni to propose to her the way he did. She’s also a little angry because she was waiting to be courted by him and he never did. She doesn’t say anything to him about that, though. She accepts his proposal and they go inside. Francesca is still thinking about Giacomo and what he said to her. She feels bad that she was so harsh with him, but she doesn’t know how to apologize to him.

A Final Surprise for Francesca:
The next morning, Francesca goes outside to the garden to think. She decides that since she and Giacomo are both staying at her family’s home, she will seek him out and apologize for being so harsh. She doesn’t get very far, though, before she hears a loud roar coming from the forest. She freezes in place. She knows that sound. She’s heard it before. She runs as fast as she can back to the castle, her heart pounding in her chest. She begs her father for his sword and he gives it to her. She runs back to the garden and waits for the dragon to come to her. She’s scared out of her mind, but she won’t let him know it. When he finally emerges from the darkness, he asks her to come away with him and she accepts.

The Conclusion:
Francesca and Giovanni marry soon after the dragon takes her away. They are happy together, but Francesca still dreams of the dragon. She’s never bothered to ask him his name, but she knows that he appears to her every night in her dreams. They build a life together in her dreams, but it’s not until Francesca’s dying breath that she finds out the dragon’s name is Giacomo. She dies a happy woman, knowing she was loved.
