Valley of the Sun
There weren't always Dragons in the Valley. There are few today who were alive during the Awakening, and even fewer still old enough to remember what really happened. The stories they tell have minor discrepancies; What caused the Dragons to arise, where they first began their War of Human Extermination, how many Dragons are left. Each remaining settlement, every band of human remaining tells the same beginning: It has been nearly one hundred years since the Earth split open, and Humanity's grim obsession with fighting monsters finally came to fruition. The epicenter of this catastrophe was called "The Valley of the Sun." A dry, hot, miserable place that housed one of the most populous cities in the country. Over eight million people spread across this vast basin. Their homes kept cool all summer long with electricity powered by a hydroelectric plant a hundred miles away, every lawn a lush, verdant green thanks to water siphoned from every available well and mountain spring. Water was even trucked in to maintain this illogical and farcical city. Yet it thrived. Several of the largest universities were in this place, globally recognized restaurants were filled every night, and there was no shortage of museums and cultural centers.

“There weren’t always dragons in the valley,” once there were ogres, giants, and one-eyed demons that lived on the surface. When the dragons came, they started eating many of them, forcing most to leave the valley. Some, out of desperation, went into caves and found passageways into deep underground crevices. They built houses, bridges, lighting rock lanterns, and a civilization. The dragons do not know about these cities.

Nestled in the north of the Summerlands on the border of Midany, the Vale of Craigalmron, bounded by sheer faces of rock on all sides but the east was smothered in a verdant carpet of ancient woodland. A river wound lazily through its base fed by the many waterfalls that threw themselves from the heights of the valley walls, blanketing the valley in a fine mist. Few villages had set down their roots here, the isolation making the valley a peaceful place. Peaceful, asides from the dragons.

There weren't always dragons in the Valley. They reappeared rather recently, actually. You’d presume the war between Kelimine and Dreaus to have been the source of their disappearance, thousands of years prior, but no. They were rumored to have killed one another in fact. Described as vengeful, carnivorous demons that ached and itched for a good hunt. Monsters that would scour both land and skies for enemies and when they crowned the food chain, they turned to one another instead, the thirst plunging strong. That’s what the elders say at least. That these large lumps of mossy stone, rolling onto their bellies like a cat near a fire on a snowy day, are the most dangerous predators man has ever known. Clearly man has never known me then. I undoubtedly rival their aptitude for hunting mice, their swift nature at stalking and of course the terrifying bodily mass.

The Half-Blood Calamity
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. At least that is what my mother tells me. When she was a little girl she used to play in the river there. Mother says that there were movies, and fireworks, and the most amazing foods with spices, fruits, and delectable sauces. There were cars fueled by water. And people would play sports or create art simply for the fun of it! How they had time for fun still astounds me. Mother likes to tell me that the people of the city were dream-chasers; and that her home used to be the technology capital of the world.
