Short Story
The Aftermath
The wind whipped wildly, and the rain simply added to the darkness that hung in the night sky. My clothes stuck to my skin. I didn’t know what to think. Waves of emotion were hitting me like a torrential downpour. Her body had already gone limp. Her skin, grey like ash from a fire. Yet her eyes were still a piercing cerulean blue, with emotion pouring from them. Her mouth hung slightly open, and I could still hear the screams, or perhaps it was simply the storm. I could hear the sirens. They had taken too long. There was so much that needed to be said, yet I was at a loss for words. It was all their fault, and this time, forgiveness wasn’t an option.

Superhero or Supervillain?
In the real world, there are no true superheroes, only ordinary heroes and villains—individuals devoid of supernatural powers who navigate the moral complexities of life. Yet, mass culture has shaped a simpler narrative since the 1930s: the hero is always good, and the villain is always evil. However, reality isn’t that black and white, and neither are the characters that reflect our values in pop culture.

Under the Moonlight. Content Warning.
A July full moon beamed down, casting its pale reflection over the water. The humid summer air was suffocating, each breath stifling my lungs as I stood on the banks of the bayou with my love in my arms. She rested her head against my shoulder, her hair glinting like liquid gold in the moonlight. My lovely Nellie, looking ravishing in a red dress that matched my jacket. She was still just as beautiful as the day I met her in that speakeasy five years ago. The memories of that night flashed in my mind as I gazed into her eyes.

Overboard
The luxury yacht traveled with the best and brightest and richest and wealthiest aboard. We were off to Calmino Island for the mukamuks and high rollers to enjoy fun and festivities in the sun for a day. John Rogers captained the yacht for the journey and he had promised our travelers a good time in the sun. He meant to make good on that promise. I was a simple crewman underneath his tutelage; but John Rogers was a proud man. He had made our wealthiest passengers a promise that fateful day; and, as his youngest and newest crewman with the least seniority on the team, I was almost honored when he had invited me along. If the rich and the wealthy could enjoy five days in the eternal sunshine of Calmino Island, so could Captain Rogers; so could I!

Pink Skies
Portsmouth Harbor, New Hampshire- 1904 My hands held tight to the soft white linen with the embroidered initial of my wife Loretta. The handkerchief, which I found tucked under a loose floorboard in our home was a not a gift from me. Nor were the letters that handcrafted fabric was wrapped around. At first it brought me tears that my young wife twenty years my junior had betrayed me while I was at sea. Then when I came out of my despair another feeling came forward. I placed the piece of wood under my bench near the starboard.
