The wind whipped wildly, and the rain simply added to the darkness that hung in the night sky. My clothes stuck to my skin. I didn’t know what to think. Waves of emotion were hitting me like a torrential downpour. Her body had already gone limp. Her skin, grey like ash from a fire. Yet her eyes were still a piercing cerulean blue, with emotion pouring from them. Her mouth hung slightly open, and I could still hear the screams, or perhaps it was simply the storm. I could hear the sirens. They had taken too long. There was so much that needed to be said, yet I was at a loss for words. It was all their fault, and this time, forgiveness wasn’t an option.
The days have started melting into each other. My ledger was gushing red. I didn’t need powers to prove a point. It would seem that gun licence and hunting weekends throughout my childhood and adolescence had paid off. I stared at the mirror, the reflection of a stranger stared back at me. The bleakness of my eyes, like firewood turned into cinder. I no longer killed for her. My flame had gone out, and I had lost sight of it all. I brought one hand to each side of my mouth, and stretched the skin upwards. I slowly took them away, as if the movement would scare off the fragile soul in the glass. The smile quickly dropped back into my now permanent grimace. What have I become?
