A Simple Fetch Quest. Runner-Up in Whispering Woods Challenge.
The woods are dark. I step through the shadows of the ancient trees, shadows so deep in places that my eyes can't penetrate them. There's a rustling from those shadows, nudging at my fight or flight instincts. The smell of petrichor lingers in the air, underscored by mildew. It's so dark and perpetually damp that I suspect the smell never fades.

The Weighing Woods
I smelled the wizard before I saw him- the all-consuming stench of death came in through my nostrils and ran through my body. Even the sweet poppysuckles in those Gods-forsaken woods could not cover the smell.

The Cries Of The Wild
I didn’t know how much I was hurting them. I’ve been through millions of forests, passing by trees and moss, and they felt like nothing more than scenery, a background in that point of my life. They were alive, but they weren’t sentient, they didn’t feel like anything to really care about.

Enchanted Elms. Top Story - April 2024.
The twins had wandered too far and lost their way. They had left home that morning for a day of adventure. The king and queen had specifically warned them against traveling too far; had even reminded the prince and princess to stay protective of one another. Princess Alana had remembered their parents' directions and meant to abide by it; Prince Meric either hadn't remembered his parents' advice or, as usual, had chosen to ignore their words.

"There is danger at the edge," Irene told the newly born sapling. "I don't understand, Mother." "I did my best to birth you deep inside our forest hamlet, but destructive humans come deeper each day. Flying objects called buzzers zoom over my head and those of my relative, noisily searching for new playgrounds."

"And it's here, above me, that once in five or ten years, these huge Dipterocarp trees burst forth and turn the billowing rainforest of Sumatra into a riot of colour as one species after another comes into flower..."

A Stranger in the Clearing
The sun hung low in the sky, beams of light sparkling between the tree branches. A pinkish-orange glow painted the horizon and the clouds above, as though their brilliant white had been dyed by wildflowers. The color would fade to blackness soon enough, but, for now, a few precious minutes of glory remained to be enjoyed. The young elm delighted in the feeling of evening sunlight on its leaves. Of all the sunlights, evening was its favorite, dusk in particular. Greater trees thrived in the afternoon brilliance, when the burning heat fed their towering forms and cast dappled light through their innumerable leaves. For the elm, afternoon often became cold; the sunlight above grew weaker with every layer of leaves it passed through, and by the time it hit the elm’s branches, it might as well have been the dying breath of a honey bee. The elm could feel it, but reached no deeper than the surface.

Mother of The Woods. Runner-Up in Whispering Woods Challenge.
When Lilia listened to the woods, truly listened, the woods spoke back. It communicated, of course, not through mere words as humans did, but through ways of a more natural sort, a godlike sort, whispering sweet nothings to her through wisps of wind licking between her fingers. Its curling, giggling, lilting breeze tickled the hairs on her neck, making them stand at attention like a pack of hungry, primal beasts. The woods never pushed or pulled her this way or that; rather, the woods probed at her playfully, lovingly, as she walked past the beauty of it, immersing herself body and soul into its depths, letting the shrubs and ferns speak to her through those long, scratching traces they left along her exposed arms and legs, letting them tell her their meaning, their history. She closed her eyes and listened to them speak.
