The Custodians
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. But actions have consequences, and even little actions have a way of escalating. Now, dragons soared in the skies, tunnelled into the hillsides, and snaked swiftly through the lake – iridescent, elegant masters of their chosen element or terrain. They were beautiful, terrifying creatures, and Sigrid both regretted and rejoiced in her part she had played.

Age of Dragons
~ Chapter 1 ~ There weren't always dragons in the valley. But if you linger around barstools late into the night, you'll hear fragments of stories slip out from the old men. Join the circle of any of the cooking fires and ask one of the elders to spin tales of what life was like before the shift, and little by little, the truth of the old world is revealed. Cece was fascinated by it, and couldn't imagine a time when immediate tasks of survival didn't rule the day. They spoke of massive tin structures bigger than the dragons themselves, that flew to faraway places. That the people wore brightly coloured clothing and fancy shoes on their feet, and colours that women (and some men) put on their faces to get attention. They spoke of little black boxes that each person carried with them to communicate with others. It felt like something from another world entirely. How could it all have disappeared without a trace? Wouldn't there be some proof of it? Cece was determined to find the answers to these questions, even if it meant leaving the valley to do so.

Darkness of the Rai'Nati
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. But what once was, no longer mattered. Dragons had come and, with them, evil. Euticus put his head in his hands, his sorrow and exhaustion making it too heavy to hold upright. He balled a fist and put it against his mouth to stifle a cry.

Sleepless Dream
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. I opened my eyes. Was that the last thing Geoff had said to me? But that wasn’t the question I should have been asking myself, as I turned my head slowly, cradled by lush, green grass. I appeared to be laying in the center of a mushroom circle. I reached my hand out cautiously to touch the white-gray mushroom head, only to find my arm covered in a thin layer of baby-blue mesh. I sat up, looking down at myself. I was wearing an evening gown? I surveyed the area around me, finding an open field of grass, with small bushels of wild flowers every few yards.

A Battle Waged and Lost
There weren't always dragons in the valley. Few are alive to remember a time before them — before weapons of war cleaved the mountain in two, and the balance of power shifted away from the humans who broke it. Change didn't come immediately; as most things do, it came gradually.

Dragons in Our Barrio
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. In fact, there wasn’t much in the Valley. Strip malls, taco stands, stone throw from Mexico and an hour from the beach. The Valley wasn’t the best but to me it was great and now I’m not so sure. It started not to long ago people became sick something was in the air that was affecting the community hospitals became overrun to the point that it became better to stay at home and pray for recovery. No one knew what caused this, those affected stated they smelled sulfur and heard thunder before heeling over out of breath. All around the Valley men, women, and children it was random no one seemed to be at risk but everyday someone healthy would end up inches from death. The world all over began to report cases no real cause, no real answers.
