Chapter 1
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. They had only made it their home when the toxins in the air became deadly, driving any surviving humans into the Three Cities. Standing at the top of the Valley, I can only hope that my father helped me make the right choice. Otherwise, this mask, these goggles, this sword, and the fate of humanity had been placed in the wrong hands. Please let this work, I think to myself as I turn the knob on my goggles to the setting that allows me to see the toxins swirling around. As I look at where I’m standing, I see the usual green strands that writhe through the air, marking the poison, yet as I look into the Valley, they seem to dissipate, as though the air down there is clean, which I was not anticipating.

The Cloak of Many Things
“There weren’t always dragons in the valley.” Iyren whispered. She sat with her hands around her knees staring down at the dying coals of the cook fire. The embers cast a dim light across the evergreens, but more importantly their meager heat helped stave off impending frostbite. Around her displaced families spoke softly and sang their sorrows amongst themselves.

Prologue - The Kyndling There weren’t always dragons in the valley. The valley once teemed with people. Towns and villages dotted the landscape, and everyone lived in relative peace. Children played in the streets, and villagers joyously welcomed the seasons with new moon festivals.

Uberous Valley
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. For generations, the lush, verdant Uberous Valley had been a garden paradise. Rich, fruitful, land grew crops in effortless ease and abundance. More than enough for everyone in Verdant Village to have everything they needed and more. Illness, starvation, greed... These were dark things told of a time long past. War? War was stories told of other places. Other people. Lesser people.

The Dawn of Magic
There weren’t always dragons in the valley, until they began coming from the deserts in the north. They came in massive numbers, it’s unclear if they were invading or fleeing. They corrupted the hearts of men as they flooded over the land. Taking as they pleased bewitching the people to fight their battles. The dragons were at war with themselves. Some fought to gain an advantage over others for territory. Others for the pleasure of fighting and being In control. My father was one of these bewitched fighters. He rose from his bed one night and walked away wearing only his pants and carrying a kitchen knife. Father Trenton came and told us the news

A Song Of The Godless
"There weren't always dragons in the valley." a bored, arrogant voice fell hard to the ground. The rain assaulted the stone walls of the cell. The air was cold, damp, and smelled of despair and hopelessness. Mold was growing in the back corners that the rats used to shroud themselves in the shadows. They had already made a break for their nests at the first booming of the sky being ripped open by the clashing lightning above the ocean waves. A single lit torch barely glowing with life, just out side the wooden bars of the cells supplied the only breath of warmth casting a small light struggling to hold it's own against the shadows.

The Wizard's Apprentice & The Quest for the Dragon Eye
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. There have been legends of dragons living in the surrounding mountains for as long as there have been people living here. However, without sightings of dragons for hundreds of years, the old legends became accepted as nothing more than fairy tales. That all changed last night when hundreds of dragons descended in a swarm on the Valley. Causing mass destruction, wreaking havoc, and inciting chaos all throughout the city … and I might be the one responsible for bringing them here. I'm hoping that writing the events that transpired out like this will help clear my mind, and possibly my conscience as well. To give the full picture of what happened, I'll have to start from a few months ago when an eighth grade history lesson sparked the journey that has changed my life, forever.
