I Am April
I stepped into the dark ally, holding my neck, as blood dripped down my fingers. Tonight I did something stupid. My wound was burning so bad that I wanted to scream but could not choke it out. Scared and weak, I stumbled my way to a brick wall alongside the ally and slid my back down until my butt hit the cold cement ground. Closing my eyes, the city noises around me became louder, and the smells of the ally garbage became stronger as the vampire venom was taking over my bloodstream. I could do nothing to stop the transformation unless a vampire was willing to suck the venom out before the change was complete. But kindness like that is unheard of.

39 Years and Holding
September 3, 2025 One thing that they don’t tell you about living at a beach-side resort is that you can never get a good night of sleep. I woke up to a flash of electric blue that illuminated my room and a crash of thunder that rattled my bed. Another storm was blowing in over Lake Erie. After finally falling back to sleep, the seagulls started screaming and calling to each other just as the sun was about to rise. I walked over to the window and yelled at them through the dirty glass but they just looked at me and then started talking again.

Return
In the end, the world returned to the chosen. We emerged from oaken hollows and mossy dells. Sifting through the ash and smog, we coaxed life from the dry, barren ground. We wove gowns from folly and hosted feasts among the hubris. Barefoot, we padded through the irradiated forests, luring three eyed fawns and bloodthirsty rabbits with the song of flutes. Praise to the chosen, we who stand when man has fallen. Praise to the merciful keepers of nature.
