The Mother
The mother dragged her weary tail through the forest floor, her golden scales tinkled over the dry autumn leaves and scraped the sides of the pine trees. The scent of the cindering dwellings and charred bodies of their kind billowed in the smoky air. Brittle bones dried from dragon’s fire cracked and splintered under her talons. Her wolf-like head hung low as her black winged arms followed the footstep of grief and delirious exhaustion. Her sides heaved as she panted while the thought of her nest pulled her home. The familiarity to return still lingered in her spine as reality cruelly reminded her of the unbelievable truth.

The Dragon's Heir
The thunderous sound of giant flapping wings filled the air as the massive dragon soared over the land far below. Its ruby scales shone like fire against the clear sky, drawing the attention of humans who stared and pointed, though whether in fear or in wonder it did not know. Perhaps a mixture of both. It had been some time since Taugomir, last of the Great Dragons, had ventured to this region. It was likely that few if any in the area had ever seen something like him. He paid little attention to the humans, however. They were beneath his notice, unlike what had drawn him to the region in the first place.

The Blood of Telkan
Dragons were nothing but myth and legend. Even during the golden age of the Kingdom of Dagnar when magical and mystical powers were the norm, the great winged beasts were believed to be nothing more than the results of a bard's imagination. None had ever been seen and no one even bothered with claiming to have seen one, no matter how fervently they believed their eyes. As lust for gold and power dismantled the great kingdom, however, the lone survivor of the blessed and regal House of Telkan discovered otherwise.

Euruisa
The sky was dark and unforgiving. The wind whipped around the trees, the missing persons flyers blowing around wildly. Jenna’s voice was hoarse from all the yelling over the last few hours. It was one of those things. One of the things that happen to other people, but never to you. The kind of thing you never thought would happen in your town, let alone to your family. It was the kind of thing you read on Facebook, saw in the papers; but it didn’t happen to you.

Nettleskin. Runner-Up in Christopher Paolini's Fantasy Fiction Challenge.
There is a place in the forest where the trees are more ancient than the land is. Each has a shape and a name and a presence of its own, like the letters of a sentence, though the secrets they spell are written for far older and stranger things than I. The gloom beneath the branches is perpetual and deep. Here, the mushrooms grow in rings, chill mists form at noon and midnight and bodiless voices murmur in the shadows. It is no place for a mortal to linger.

The Prophecy
The Prophecy By Robert Adauto III Searching for prey used to be easy, but searching for it while your kind was facing extinction was another matter altogether. Time had run out for the humans and was quickly drawing to a close for the dragons. It seemed their time had come to an end–but not yet.

A Picture Complete!
Clouds swiftly came across and draped the moon shining so brightly in the night sky. The wind howled, and mist started to cover nature's surroundings, warning the wayward wanderers of its intentions. It was Halloween night, and mischief was about to knock on someone's door.

The Forest Dragon's Heart
The Forest Dragon sensed a stirring, a presence in the woods that was not native to its territory. The mushrooms were concerned, the moss had a complaint, the twigs were chittering all about it, the insects didn't know whether to be awe-filled or awfully annoyed. As sovereign of this land, the dragon would surely take care of the issue, one way or another. With a stretch of wings and a slither of scales, the ground rumbled in its wake. Ready, if needed, to intimidate.

Coin Keeper's Investment
Coin Keeper awoke to a piercing wail. The complete darkness of the night confused and disoriented the dragon, mind heavy with an extended sleep. A glance outside of his cave raised more confusion; it was snowing heavily. He should have still been deep in hibernation, conserving his energy. As he struggled to understand why he was awake, another shrill cry rang out.
