Diary of a Child with an Abusive Father
"Dear Diary, I don't know where to begin; there is so much going on in my small head that I can't seem to organize it. Maybe I'll start with yesterday, when Dad came home angry, as usual. I don't know why he was angry, but I know it means trouble for Mom and me." "His hands were shaking, and his voice was very loud. I tried to hide in my room, but Dad was too fast. He grabbed my arm and started yelling in my face. I felt scared, and the more he yelled, the faster my heart beat. I don't understand why he does this. Did I do something wrong? Is it Mom's fault?" "Sometimes, I try to remind myself that Dad isn't always like this. Sometimes he smiles, sometimes he tries to be nice. I remember once, when I was five years old, he took me to the park and bought me chocolate ice cream. That day was one of the happiest days of my life. But now, all those memories seem so far away, like they happened in someone else's life." "Mom always tries to calm him down; she speaks to him gently and tries to protect me. Sometimes she cries when he doesn't see, but I see it. I see it in her broken eyes, in her sad look that carries all the pain in the world. I wish I could help her, stop the pain, make her smile again." "Today, I decided to write to you, dear diary, because I feel lonely. I can't tell anyone what's happening. I'm afraid Dad will get angrier. And I'm afraid my friends will be sad. So, you are the only one I can talk to. I want to be a normal child, like other kids who laugh and play without fear." "Sometimes, I imagine myself as a little bird, able to fly away from all this pain. I want to fly to a place where I don't have to hide, where I don't have to be afraid. But until that day comes, I'll stay here, in my room, writing to you and dreaming." "I wish I could change things, help Dad to be happy, help Mom to be strong. But I'm just a child, too small in a big and complicated world. I hope there is hope for tomorrow; I hope there is light in this darkness." **The End**

Arly's Army
After an hour of listening to Harry’s anthology of horror stories, I came to understand that the dark realm was ruled by a single, villainous entity. Her name was Arly and she was once one half of Derrick’s most prized pair of socks. She was an Arlington Catholic Cougars crew sock which Derrick received as a gift from the high school, along with a fancy leather Letterman jacket, for winning the state football championship.

Phone Manner
I'm supposed to have a hearing appointment, and I'm late. Technically, half of the company has hearing appointments, at least the half that works on calibrating the hearing aids we produce. Don't want to over-compensate if one of us is hard of hearing and didn't realise, I suppose.

Kindness of a Stranger
Is it hubris to enter the challenge I inspired? Oh well... There’s a lady on the train platform. She’s tall, with hair a shade of red not found in nature. Briefly, I wonder if it’s a wig, early onset of grey, or just for fun. She’s dressed in black, the kind of long business skirt that you don’t see much these days, and a polo shirt with a name and logo from a company I’ve never heard of. That's not unusual, though; Parramatta is the 'Western CBD', which means both that it's a crowded nightmare to navigate during peak periods, and there are a lot of businesses you've never heard of (as well as a dozen you probably have) within walking distance of the station.

The Covidian
Superhero Name: The Covidian Secret Identity/Alter Ego: Ill tempered Holiday Inn Express hotel manager Stephen Franks Origin Story: Stephen Franks is the only man in the world confirmed to have been infected with the original Covid-19 strain and all 26 known variants. During his 27th bought of the disease, he developed severe encephalitis and the resultant nerve damage in the brain caused him to develop a number of what have been characterized as "superhuman" abilities. He also developed a neurological disorder similar to Bells Palsy which resulted in a severe lisp, permanent paralysis of the left side of his face, drooping of his eyebrows and mouth, drooling from the right side of his mouth, difficulty closing one eyelid, and severe facial pain along with disordered movement of the muscles that control facial expressions, loss of the sense of taste on the front 2/3 of his tongue, and chronic tinnitus. He uses his superpowers to fight the greed and laziness of the hospitality industry whom he claims used Covid-19 an excuse to cut costs and reduce quality rather than as a source of severe disfigurement and painful disease as he did. He discovered his superpowers by accident on the day he learned of the new 5pm closing time for all hotel pools in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio which the hotel chains attributed to a shortage of lifeguards caused by Covid-19. The move was expected to save the hotels an estimated 1.5 billion dollars in combined labor and lawsuit avoidance costs. Stephen's anger at that policy caused two of his super abilities to activate. Eventually he would learn that all of his powers could be activated by anger and/or disgust.
