Death Rides a Quarter Horse
The scorching sun wasn’t the only thing James was escaping as he sat with his back against a pear tree, his body leaking from two fresh holes. The first shot had gone clean through his right shoulder. The second musket ball had made a home somewhere in his torso. That was the one, James feared, that would do him in. Adversary
I’ll make it back, Kass, the boy thought desperately. I promise. Once I kill this thing. He pivoted fluidly to evade another swing of the adversary's obsidian blade, then planted his feet to catch the next attack with his staff. The dark blade nearly cleaved the boy’s weapon in two, but it held. His opponent pulled back, and the boy darted forward to deliver a deathblow, aiming the point of his staff directly at the creature’s neck.

The Wanderings of Cedric Slip
I balanced on that delicate wire of life. I definitely was not dead. But I wasn’t quite alive either. I stirred from my dank room of dreams. The Great Puppet Master flicked my eyelids open. Strings tugged and dropped at my stiff joints, dragging my body with them. Wilted, I sat limp, positioned on the edge of the bed as my brain pulsed images of the night’s dreams through to my state of wakefulness. It was the same dream. Again…
