Dedication To the one I love and had to let go of: The Pirate-Cowboy-Prince It started when I was little. Shiny things, pretty things caught my eye. It began with flowers and rocks. Butterflies and mushrooms. I remember once my mother hit the toadstool I had found in the yard out of my hand before I put it in my mouth. “That could be poison!” She shrieked. That was when I learned at the age of five that beautiful things could be dangerous. I didn’t learn my lesson though.

Man From The Shadows. Content Warning.
Man From The Shadows Olive cracked open the door of the rundown shack where she and Beth, her younger sister, were hiding. The air that rushed in was cold and crisp, carrying with it the subtle warning of doom. An eerie fog hung thick and low over the cobblestone road that ran past the rickety old dwelling. Weeds forced their way through the cracks, but showed no sign that the Dark Elves of Evrade had been pursuing them. She knew differently, though. For the better part of six months, they had been running. There was something in the air, though; the energy of the night was more electric somehow. She could still feel the threat that pressed in on them, but there was something different as well. She narrowed her eyes to try to see beyond the shadows.

The Hunter
Taras K’ark made his way through the forest carefully as he watched for motion among the treeline. Although thankfully, there was nothing but it didn’t change that he remained on high alert. He looked off towards the younglings as they were with the other Hunter who was telling them the kinds of plants that they could and could not eat or harvest. Taras for his part was not paying attention to what the old warrior was saying, his pale face hardened from years of hard work. There were three diagonal scars across his face and he was blind in his right eye and he was missing his left arm but even with all of that, there was no one who knew plants better than he did.

A Touch of Freedom
By Clive Thomas When Cole awoke that morning, he wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary. The apartment was the same; compact, shabby, paint peeling from the walls. The grey venetian blinds were still somehow hanging together, concealing the dusty window that gave him some privacy from the apartment block opposite. He dragged himself up, tossing back the doona at a weak attempt to make his bed. Boiling the kettle, he dropped a tea bag in his cup, which was still dirty from the night before. He had run out of detergent and wouldn’t be allowed into the supermarket for another couple of days. Cole scribbled ‘detergent’ on a scrap of paper. Hopefully, there would be some left. So many items were rationed it was ridiculous. But not as ridiculous as the latest laws.

A Boy, A Bear, and A Blanket
I “Come on, Beary! Let’s keep going,” the boy says. The nine-year-old boy is running through the woods, holding the stuffed bear’s paw. As they weave through the trees, the boy’s shaggy blond hair sways back and forth like an upside-down tree in the wind. His hazel-green eyes shift back and forth as he searches for the best route between the trees. They run and they run and they run. They approach a small fallen tree and the boy easily climbs over the lumber, but the bear is not able to. In an attempt to climb over the collapsed tree, Beary falls down and cuts his arm open, causing stuffing to stick out.
