Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. I rather feel like I hear screams too often while looking at the vastness of the stars above me. Inhaling the salty air as I stand just close enough to the ocean for the water to roll over my feet, I ignore the subtle hues of different colored lights coming from me. Almost in a trance, I stand perfectly still as I await something I’m not a hundred percent certain of as a memory rises.

It’s all a bit complicated, and I am still sorting through the details. The “details”?? Hmmm… maybe the answer is in the details. What are the details, I wondered? And then I realized I can’t remember… ANYTHING. Not only are details fuzzy, but everything is fuzzy.

Hunters
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Zi faltered suddenly, the memory of a warning snapping her out of pace on what was beginning to feel like an endless journey. She stopped moving, trying to recall where she had heard that before, and upon realizing that she was alone, decided to wait for her sisters to catch up. By the time she could make out two figures on the horizon, the sun was almost gone. On its slow descent, lingering streaks of auburn seemed to fuse into the muted copper earth, creating the most unusual sunset. In a few hours, the desert would be pitch black and frigid, with only a crescent of obscured moonlight to keep them on trail. The night in front of them promised danger, so Zi savored the residual warmth above her head pouring out of the taupe sky like paint on a murky canvas, its glow reminiscent of daylight. The brief moment of quiet broke quickly with the sound of footsteps catching up. Turning to face the approaching hunters, Zi gave them a quick once-over. Seri, the oldest of the group, wore an irritated expression, opening her mouth to speak the moment she stopped walking.

Chapter 1 Xallia They say, nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space. It would probably just kill me faster anyway. My muddled reflection struggled to breathe, distorted on the caved in wall of my cockpit, laying between me and the endless Black Sea. I dare not look away from her, in fear of giving into the warm pool enveloping my body, beckoning me to sleep. I watched as her chest rose and fell short. In her eyes I found the reflection of a life already lived, the burden of countless taken, and the hollowness of a future never to be. The sea of green and gold engulfing the wandering needlepoint of our eye, was the only thing I seemed to recognize. Drifting to the bloody mess that was a pressurized suit, black and silver strands of cloth clung to our arms plastered to several long gashes that seemed to have always been. Speckled, charred, blistered and bloodied flesh, peaked through burn holes dappled down our legs. The ancestral marking slicing the jade of our now bare torso cut short. A piece of curved metal shrapnel glistened just below our lungs. Laying side by side, bits of blonde dipped crimson spilled across the floor. Crushed by my source of freedom, accompanied by a reflection, It seemed about right. A fitting end for someone who had lived like me. The weight of the vastness around me pulled my eyes shut. Pulling me further from my partner. My tie to this physical plane, my comfort and my pain. Replaced by the gentle coax of the vastness of space.
