Sweet Dreams (Karissa)

Two Sides of the Dream Realm after Nighttime Snacks (Karissa's Perspective)

Karissa had always loved the peaceful fields. A field was a place where she felt calm and at absolute peace with the universe. Nature acted as a soothing balm for her weary soul. She stretched, basking in the sunshine and admiring the chirps of birdsongs.

Karissa walked over to the open window and reflected on her beautiful surroundings. She noticed a watery wolf sprawled out on the field. It was stretched across the field as if to soak up as much of the warm, loving sunshine as possible. Karissa smiled. The sunshine teased her, light skipping across her skin like bunnies.

Then she saw something in the distance, or rather someone. The figure approached. A sense of foreboding overcame Karissa. It was Serena. Karissa gulped. She was not prepared for Serena.

Karissa stepped outside, shielding her eyes from the sun with a hat, and as Serena came closer, she could see the gleaming smile on Serena’s face. It seemed as bright as the sun.

Serena gazed lovingly at her friend and was surrounded by a flock of affectionate, endearing, hilarious hawks. They flew overhead, squawking as if cracking jokes. Serena spoke softly in a hushed tone, "I love you, and I want to be silly."

The whisper startled Karissa; she had become distracted by the numerous hawks. They were such an unusual sight. She looked back at her friend, overcome with great sassiness, and fingered the silky sun hat resting upon her head. "Serena, you're so strange," she replied.

They looked at each other, perplexed, as two cuddly chipmunks scampered across the field, playing and chasing each other with not a care in the world. Karissa noticed that the field now had soft music playing in the background and two bubbly uncles lounging to the beat.

Karissa regarded Serena and her quirky ways. Her friend was, indeed, a strange one. While she had understood this for quite some time, she could never fathom the actual mental processing that took place in Serena’s mind. Serena seemed to deny all sense of rational logic.

"I feel the same way!" revealed Serena with a giddy squeal and delighted grin. Serena looked energized, her emotions seeming to overflow from her crystal necklace. It sparkled and seemed to glow profusely as if it had become charged.

Then Serena promptly left the field without warning, heading inside for a refreshing drink of water.

Karissa startled awake. She sighed in exasperation. This was the last time she allowed Serena to feed her those strange concoctions of hers before bed. Karissa tossed an arm across her face and grimaced. It was such a strange dream. Serena’s peculiar quirkiness seemed to be infecting her dreams now. She settled back into her pillow, trying to regain the tranquility experienced prior to Serena’s abrupt entrance in the dream. She breathed deeply, settling her spirit.

Who the heck were those random uncles, anyway? A horde of hawks? Cracking jokes? Absolutely ludicrous. She scoffed at the dream. Silly indeed. She huffed, irritated by the nonsensical dream. At least the pair of chipmunks was cute. The watery wolf was intriguing, as well. Karissa conceded that the dream didn’t differ too greatly from Serena’s waking state. She supposed she shouldn’t be surprised.

She warily cracked open an eye to catch a glimpse of the time: 2:02 am. An exasperated huff escaped her lips. It was way too early for this, lamenting the loss of sleep. Karissa prayed she’d be able to return to the realm of restful sleep with ease. The peculiarity of the dream had set her on edge. She rolled over on the bed, attempting to get comfortable and lull herself to sleep.

Karissa would definitely exchange choice words with Serena later at a more reasonable hour. There would be no more of these disastrous dessert debacles. Karissa cringed in remembrance of last night’s fiasco. Serena had declared she unearthed the “holy grail,” insisting that Karissa take part in savoring this decadently divine dessert. What did this “divine dessert” consist of? In the name of her (self-proclaimed) “Godly-appointed quest to discover the sanctified desserts of the Heavens” Serena had taken it upon herself to stuff an assortment of ice cream, brownies, and sopapilla inside of two massive chocolate chip cookies to create a monstrosity of a sandwich. Serena had beamed as if it was the most natural thing in the world, like it was blatantly obvious—how could anyone not realize its greatness? Karissa shuddered, stomach feeling queasy just at the passing thought of that “sandwich.” How Serena stomached that atrocity was beyond Karissa. She could only manage a few bites (to humor her best friend—she honestly had wanted no part of massacre that masqueraded as “food,” but she couldn’t handle Serena’s devastated tears if she had refused to at least try the blasted creation). It was too much sugar; Karissa was surprised she hadn’t gotten a cavity merely by looking at the thing. Serena swore that this “celestial treat” would ensure sweetness to all that consumed it, including dreams. Sweet dreams, indeed.
